Hoping to pickup a 17-4 soon and was wondering DOB

Serial number is AJD 30XX. Present owner thinks he may have bought it mid 80 ' s but not sure. Any other info is greatly appreciated! ! Thanks in advance.

February 1986, give or take a month.

The 6-inch had a product code of 100502. If you're gonna start a thread, you're obligated to post some pics.

It's a 6" bbl. and blued finish. Unfortunately no box, original grips, or other goodies. Will have to reinstall the original rear sight as there is presently a rail installed with a red dot. From what the pics I've seen it looks good and will definitely post up some eye candy. Thanks for the info so far guys! !

Is the rear sight assembly under that base? If not, make sure you ask for it. They're getting more expensive and harder to find. I'm not even sure S&W sells it anymore.

The owner says he has it, I just need to find out how it goes back on.

It's easy to get back on. Once you have it in hand you'll see how it goes. Just be careful with the front screw. It's tiny and the head is easy to bugger-up. Some "hollow ground" screw driver bits would be handy to have.

Picked it up Tuesday and will dust the barrel soon. I'm probably going to try it out with the red dot then swap out the original sight. Will pretty much any K or L frame grips fit these ? Thought I saw a statement that dry firing without a snap cap is not recommended, is my memory serving me well?

Yes, square butt K/L frame stocks of any maker should fit, and use snap caps or the undented part of a .22 empty for dry firing.
