I had 2 misfires earlier today while sighting in my deer tumper. I inspected both rounds and both of which have perfect primer strikes that dented very good. I ended up ejecting both rounds and re chambering both. They both fired perfect after re chamber and stayed within the 1/2 MOA @ 100yrds.

Any one else testing these for their deer tumpers or is everyone sticking to the old tried and true core-lokt?

Are you talking about Hornady factory ammo? Two misfires would bother me.

I'm sure that Core-Lokt usually works fine, but have heard of it failing on large animals, and distrust anything new made by Remington.

I keep my .270 sighted-in with Federal Premiums with 150 grain Nosler Partitions. A good general purpose load.

The 7mm-08 does use 140 grain Core-Lokts, because that's what I found when I last bought ammo for it. No misfires. One instant DRT whitetail buck. Collapsed in his tracks at about 80 yards.

For the .303, I like Winchester's Power Point 180 grain. The nose profile should let it shoot flatter than the Rem. version with a blunt nose, and closer to the military sights, set for MK VII 174 grain ball.

If I ever buy a .375, I think I'd be torn between 285 grain Speer Grand Slams and the 270 grain Power Point, especially for lighter plains game, in the latter. But if Federal loads Noslers in .375 H&H, probably those.

Smitty, how old is the ammo?

The Remington .303 is VERY wimpy. The shape of the bullet makes no odds because it is not moving fast enough. The FNM surplus and Prvi 174gr FMJ are both close to MkVII.

Sorry im slow here guys. This ammo was brand new off the shelf. From the day i bought it to the day i tested it (maybe a day between). This was factory ammo thats been damn near impossible to find around here. It seems since the price is $22 a box of 20rds. Everyone and their neighbor is buying it up for this coming rifle season which starts up next week.

I havent and idea why those 2 rounds failed. But did indeed both fire after i rechambered them. All other ammo i tested that day worked perfectly fine.

These were the Hornady Whitetail Interlock. I believe this to be a new ammo Hornady is pushing at the moment.

Good point, Steve, but you can't hunt here in the USA with FMJ bullets. At least not for most game animals.

Contact Hornady. They need to know for their QC on ammo, since it sure looks as though they got some bad primers.

Probably high primers as the second strike did it. I'd contact hornady and let them know, their cs has been good in the past when I contacted them about their ammo giving me a sticky bolt and flat primers in my savage. Probably need to adjust priming depth on their machines a touch more.

Did you save the box with the lot numbers.

Contact Hornady. Couple years back they had problems with their Critical Defense line of handgun ammo. The metal of the priming cups was too hard and ignition often took a couple hammer strikes.

I had one box of it. I called Hornady and they had me send it back. They replaced it with two new boxes of properly primed ammo. They provide excellent customer service, and would very much like to hear from you about this, I'm sure.

Be sure to include any batch or lot numbers and date/time of manufacture from the box. That will help them isolate the problem.

Got any pictures of these primer hits? I have had problems in the past where about 1 in 10 rounds miss fired but would fire the second time around. Primer hits looked good but in reality were not, replaced my firing pin And all was good. Perhaps try 20 rounds of another brand.

Are you firing them from a bolt gun or a modern sporting rifle? Chambering could be an issue in a semi auto. I'd talk to Hornady about the issue in any case.
