I was working with a friend via IM to set up his 9mm Hornady dies in his LNL AP. He was getting a ring on the bullet. Using 3 die set 546516 taper crimp.

It became abundantly clear to me we were talking chickens and cockroaches until I find that his dies have an adjustment for both crimp and seating depth and mine only have seating depth. My die set is 546515 (roll crimp) but I use it adjusted to just take out the bell. I adjust crimp by the depth of the die in the press. I got mine in the great shortage of 2012/13 ;)

So I looked around on Midway and other sites and it looks like Hornady changed their design across the board to have both a crimp and seat adjust on both sets.

When did Hornady change their design on their seat/crimp dies? Funny they still have the same part numbers.

I called Hornady and they did not change their design for the roll crimp seat/crimp dies. It is still a single depth adjustment. The retailers are using the wrong pictures.

Thanks again for the help!

My 9mm seating/taper crimp die looks like this

Middle section adjusts crimp, top adjusts seating depth.

Other versions, threading the die body adjusts crimp and I don't believe they taper crimp

Your 9mm handloads will be far better quality if you use a taper crimp die (not a roll crimp), and seat the bullets before crimping with a separate operation.

Otherwise, you'll probably shave the bullet as it is being crimped.

EXACTLY!!! I was thrown because some of the retail sites were using the picture of the taper crimp/seat die for both sets! I thought maybe the design had changed. Hornady cleared it up for me!!!!!

Thanks, I understand all this. I was just curious if Hornady had changed the design of the die.
