Hornady XTP FN 500 Gr. for deer?

Looking to find a good round for deer in 500 smith and wesson. Now i understand that just about any round in the 500 is gonna be impressive vs deer. High velocity vs Pure knock down...Ive had good luck with winchester supreme platinum tip with the 44 magnum. But the other day at my local store i picked up two boxes of these 500 grain hornadys for "cheap"(lol yea right 60 bucks cheap) but they were cheaper than the winchesters(72 bucks a box....holy $*&!) so i went with em...my only concern will they over penetrate and not expand or will they deliver that energy to the deer and not the dirt behind it...i cant seem to find any tests or reviews anywhere...

It would seem to me that any 500 round would be too much for deer. But heck, give it a try.

The only thing I know for sure is that the 500gr bullets are no fun to shoot!

As crazy as it sounds i actually enjoy shooting the 500 grain rounds. I figure its a 500 might as well. If its worth doing its worth over doing.

You might want to do a little experimentation and find out how thick a tree you can shoot through and still get that deer. That should cut down on overpenetration.

You are right to be concerned about overpenetration. What is the limit for deer in your state? If you can get several to line up, you could fill several tags with a single shot!

I personnaly would just go for the most accurate load for your gun...any 500 is probably overkill for deer. I may try the 350 HP and see how that does this year.

In ohio you can not double up on deer down at one time...Multiple deer can be shot in one day. However they must be tagged in and claimed BEFORE another deer can be downed...I have decided to go light and fast. Im currently loaded and sighted to 100 yards with hornady leverlution rounds. They are only an inch 50 yards and only an inch and a quarter low at 200...it just seems very impressive the capabilities of the firearm. Its also way more accurate than i can ever be.

The 500 grain will work just fine on deer - it'll start out being a half inch entry hole and that's what most calibers try to end up being LOL

Unless you take out both front shoulders or hit the CNS on your deer - don't expect that deer to just flop over & die on ya. It'll take off just like it was hit with a 30-30 or 308 and pile up somewhere between 10 and 100 yards from where you hit it - if your shot was placed correctly, that is.

thanks ive downed 3 deer with a ruger super redhawk 44 mag in the past and all but 1 stayed within the 100 yard mark the other was a high shoulder shot and broke the bone...and luckily severed an artery we found it an hour later still alive but just was and followed it up with a clean kill shot.
