This seems like an appropriate forum for this question...

Has anyone tried the new Hornady Self Defense ammunition and what do you think of it.. I have ordered some of the ./38 Spec. +P, .357 Mag. and .45 Acp Self Defense stuff from Hornady to test, but wondered what everyone thought of this concept.. This ammo should take care of the New Jersey "No Hollowpoint ammo for Self Defense" statue..

I've only tried the .45 ACP Horandy SD in both my Kimbers (Custom and Ultra Carry) and love it. Every round has run through without any issues. This is the round I keep loaded when I CC.

I have not tried the .38 rounds yet but next time I get to Cabela's to stockup on ammo I'm gonna get some.

Do you mean Hornady Critical Defense ammo?

If so, I've only used it (at the range, not for defense) in .38 Special and I only shot a few rounds. I really can't judge it from that. The ammo I had was the standard 110 gr loading.

I'd like to see some independent tests of the stuff before believing the advertising hype and trusting it in my guns. And by "independent", I mean tests done by someone other than the gun magazines or the shooting shows on TV. The TV shows especially always prominently display and advertise Hornady ammo, so I would be suspicious of any of their ammo tests.

Sometime back, American Rifleman did independent tests of the Hornaday CD ammo and a new Winchester offering. A sentence from the article noted that the Hornaday was designed for a maximum of 10 inches penetration in addition to reducing expansion failures. Expansion in gelatin seemed typical of most quality JHP rounds. I expect qualifying in areas where hollowpoints are either forbidden or severely frowned upon is an unspoken intent.

About totally independent tests-who's going to pay for them? HP White is independent, but they don't work for free.

I've looked at them and read the info but I don't like the light weight for caliber bullets they use. Today I read about their new 44 Special and 45 Colt loadings. The 44 Special is a 165 grain bullet at 900 fps. Hornady's website shows gelatin tests with and without clothing.

I think I'll stick to 200 Grain Gold Dots and Silvertips for the 44 Special factory loads.

I tend to use hand loads more than factory and will stick with them in the 38 special.
