Next year I will be going to Galveston for a getaway. Coming from Indiana it looks like I will have to go through or around Houston. It looks like some of the roads there are toll roads that require an "EZ Tag" which of course I don't have. Would appreciate any tips on how to deal with this such as what is the best way to get to Galveston coming from the north. Also, any places in Houston/Galveston and area to be especially careful in. Thanks.

I believe Houston is like Dallas where there are cameras to capture your license plate as you pass toll points. You will then be mailed a bill. The downside is the toll rate is roughly double what an electronic pass would be!!!

I acquired an IPass for Illinois toll roads and it is usable in many other locations as well. We used it on the Chesapeake Bay bridge over Thanksgiving holidays.

As an Indiana resident, you can probably get an electronic pass for the Indiana toll road which might be usable in TX.

Just stay on I-45 south and try to get past the big buildings downtown between 10 am and 2 pm week days, then another hour to Galveston.
I use the EZ tag toll roads about any chance I get, but try to miss the main morning/afternoon rush hour traffic. Weekends, go before noon. Unless of course you like NASCAR racing on the 610 LOOP.

If you are coming down to catch I-10 in Baton Rouge---when you get get to Baytown take the Hwy 146 highway south to Galveston---it will save you 50 miles and is a nice drive.
Give me a heads-up if that is not clear.
Blessings

PS--If you do it this way when you get on top of the Fred Hartman bridge, crossing the Houston ship channel, you will have a good view of the San Jacinto battlefield and monument.

From G. Bush airport to S Houston was about $4.75 in quarters in 2006. Get a pass if possible.

If you are coming from east of Houston theN 146. If through houston take 45 s and cross the causeway to the island.

If your route is trying to tell you to take hardy toll road the defintely take 45 s instead. Depending on time of day. If it's rush hour stop somewhere to pass the time instead of sitting in it.

I know Beltway 8 still has manned toll booths.

You can set up an account at txtag.org and prepay for a tag - when you get home close the account and get a full refund. The txtag is good for all toll roads in TX.
