How can this not be a NFA item?

Rossi USA

It still has a stock and a 12" barrel, seems like an SBR to me?

seems like trouble to me

Maybe it's a pistol if it isn't cut down and left the factory that way, kind of like the Auto Ordnance Thompson "pistol" with 13" and no buttstock. If someone bought that cool little Rossi then swapped a standard buttstock on it, it would probably be a felony.

It was made as a pistol. The 'stock" is too short for shooting from the shoulder unless you are a half grown midget. If you put a stock on it, it would be an SBR.

If you took a full sized lever gun and shortened the bbl and cut the stock so that it would have the same dimensions as the Ranch Hand it would be an SBR.

The key is; in what configuration did it leave the factory.

Funny thing, I just got home from a short visit with my dealer. Someone was there picking up his Rossi "mare's leg" in .44 mag. The dealer had just gotten in a Henry "mare's leg" in .22 lr. I think the guy is going to buy it for his wife.

I guess some people still have enough money to throw away.

BTW, the dealer was on the phone doing the transfer.... there is no category for a lever action pistol - it had to be transferred as a simi-auto.

I keep thinking of buying one in .357 for shooting .38's in it. I think it would make all kinds of fun at the range. Also, the long tube for a .357 should give a good velocity for magnums. Maybe if one was set up on a shooting bag it would even give some impressive groups. I bet with some good cast bullets I would have all kinds of fun.

I'd like the idea of putting a full stock on it and going the SBR route. I guess it would be an EWR instead of an EBR :D

Kind of like the Ruger 22 Charger. Fun to shoot but no real purpose.

Yeah, and the thing that chaps me is these stupid federal laws. If it's made as a "sawed off" rifle, it legal, but if I cut mine down, I go to jail. What's the damn difference?

The difference is this is another way for the government to keep tabs on you and what you buy! They want to know every breath you take --- and to control how and when you take it!

Its just like an ar pistol and an ak rifle. When they were made they were made as a pistol and didnt start life off as a rifle. When you have a virgin receiver it can be made like that. The over all length is what makes it a pistol and the fact that the receivers were made as such. These guns are tons of fun! The rossi rifles were at the show for around $450,last week I saw them as high as $1100! The ak pistols are a blast to shoot and recoil is minimal.

It's not made as a "sawed off rifle". It is a lever action handgun. Same as Mossberg selling stockless guns to be built as AOWs instead of SBSs.

Also, you can cut your own rifle down as far as the feds are concerned. You just need to pay the tax first.

It's perfectly legal according to the ATF................Of course tommorrow is a new day.

Another dumb question. Was the dealer doing a NICS check or was this a state check? If I 'member right there is no place on the 4473 for "semi-auto".

Pecos, we only do NICS checks where I live

I still have a few old T/C Contenders.
If I take a 10" barrel and mate it to a pistol stock I'm good to go.
If I take a 23" barrel and mate it to a pistol stock I'm good to go.
If I take that 23" barrel and put it on a rifle stock - Still good.
But - If I take my 10" barrel and put it on the rifle stock I'm good to go to Club Fed after emptying my bank accounts.

I guess they're really trying to protect what's left of my hearing.
What other reason could their possibly be?

AND.....don't figure out some way to put a vertical fore grip on it. You've just built yourself an AOW.

And who said the law didn't make sense???

Rossi USA

How does one accurately aim this thing????
Do you hold it one handed at arms length-do you use two hands and actually lay your cheek on what's left of the stock and sight it like a rifle? Do you scope it?
Looks like an answer to a question that should never have been asked.

Oh and what's the difference between a "ranch hand" and a "mares leg"?

I prefer the Sig pistol:D

P556 SWAT

HAHAHA! To each his own...etc.etc.etc...
While the Ranch Hand and Mare's Leg's are more than interesting and bring out the Josh Randall in some of us I wouldn't go out and buy one. If given to me, I would not turn it down.

I have yet to see the virtue of a rifle turned into a handgun as I believe both are designed for different functions and uses as we all know. Many I have examined I have found little more than useless oddities.

Now, if you put a full stock on that Ranch Hand....I would definitely be more interested. But, like many such obsolete laws on the books (look at the laws involving switchblade knives) as long as they are there, most of us are outta luck.

That Sig reminds me of the AR-15 and AK pistols floating around out there...worthless in my book...all show and no go.
