I'm sure this has been around, but here it is again just in case. I would really like to know how this works. My guess is an optical illusion of some sort. Or, maybe a Jedi mind trick? If someone can come up with a plausible explanation I sure would like to hear it.:cool::eek:

This was a project done at RIT as the seed for a kickstarter campaign to generate a whole backstory around a made up myth of this stairwell. snopes.com: Escherian Stairwell and other google searches for "rochester escherian stairwell" will provide more info and a video of the film student who made the video for his Masters project.

They did that over at RIT ..,,huh..
They need to re-design the stairway so that when you take the stairs you just keep going and never come back.
That'd be useful.
 
In layman's terms, this has to do with Gödel's incompleteness theorem (and some shifty video editing). Self-referentiality within a system gives rise to paradoxes which can only be resolved by resort to a meta-system.

Thanks for explaining this interesting phenomenon in terms that even we ignorant rubes can comprehend --- we need more of this sort of thing...
 
"Escherian" eh? I once described the former fish/fowl National Hunting and Fishing Day logo as "Escher-esque", which landed with a dull thud. Maybe I'd ought to have used "Escherian" to reach a wider, more immediately cognitive readership???
