Met two of my most intense romances at the library.
Others either in college or where she or I worked. One was a department store clerk who I saw and hit on. First date was a new James Bond movie. Diane was my height, quite tall for a woman. Taller in heels, but we managed not to let that be an issue, although we joked about it some. One of my quips about it may be too risque for this board. She was the only girl that tall I ever dated. Generally prefer girls from 5'7"-5'8". Shortest was 5'2"; runner-up was an inch taller.
Met my wife when I got a loan. My GI Education Bill check was late and I needed money to tide me over. Pat worked in a small signature loan agency. I think I was a cut above the average customer she saw and I asked her out as soon as I was financially able. There was both a physical and an intellectual attraction. Girls who are all looks just never appealed to me for long.
I'm reminded of a spokesmodel for the South African Consulate, which had a booth at the State Fair. Sidney was American and knew nothing about that country. Her usual place was showing off new cars or promoting brands in liquor stores, etc. The two guys from the Consulate went to lunch, leaving her alone.
All she could do was to hand out literature & sort of explain displays. I liked what I saw, struck up a conversation, realized her problem, and stood with her answering questions and giving mini history lessons, until the Afrikaner guys got back.
They were so astonished by what I knew of their land, far more than the liberal press reported, that they gave me a case of Castle lager and a subscription to, SA Panorama, a wonderful magazine covering many aspects of life there.
I dated Sid for about three-four months, and she was a good fit in my arms. Well, she was a trim college girl (SMU) working as a model...But her conversation was largely limited to her sorority & campus issues, and football. I have no interest in spectator sports beyond cheerleaders and the sorority social life and girl-to-girl rivalries bored me, so we eventually broke up. And she smoked a little grass, which wasn't something with which I was at ease. Some other drugs were used in her dorm, too, and that was really just not okay!
I had many good photos of her and other flames, but after we married, Pat found them and threw them out while I was at work. BUT: she kept pictures of a couple of guys she'd dated!
Pat had more of a quick temper than I knew until after marriage, was insecure and jealous, and my mother didn't help our relationship. She was a Cancer, typically secretive and sensitive. If she'd opened up more, I think we could have talked issues out better. If there's anything to astrology,
Gemini (me) and Cancer are not the best match.
We divorced after nine years and two kids. She died last November, apparently due to a blood clot. My kids told me. In all, she was married three times. I do pray for her soul.
I've dated, but never remarried.
