Went pheasant hunting yesterday and my German Shorthair went on point. Pheasant? Noooooo. It was a polecat! Now he stinks pretty bad.
Anybody know how to get the skunk smell off a dog?
Oh, I posted this on my Facebook page. Somebody said a tomato juice bath. Obviously a fan of The Partridge Family.

Tomato juice has worked for years for this very reason, it will work. if you don't want to do it, your choice and your money.

Tomato juice and a good scrubbing will help, but only time will get rid of all of it.
One good thing, after a face full of skunk your dog is not likely to mess with one again.

Only thing I found to work was a couple baths and had her sleep outside for a week.Luckily that dog prefered being out.

A couple of baths (good scrubbing) with a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking Soda and Dawn dishwashing liquid worked for me. Use 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate), 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. You can substitute white vinegar for the Hydrogen Peroxide. It doesn't completely eliminate the smell but it made it possible to let the dog back into the house. Only time will eradicate the smell completely. Even after a couple of months the smell is still somewhat evident if the dog gets wet. I also used a product called OdoBan to help with the smell in the house and on the dog's collar, etc.

Good Luck!

Tomato juice etc. will only cover it up. You end up with a dog that smells like skunk and tomato juice which may be an improvement but not much of one.

You want to neutralize it.

This was developed by a chemist who has dogs--it works.

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Soak it in well and then rinse it off.

I wrote the formula down and put it in my bird hunting journal. Based on personal experience, it works.

Wouldn't wanta bet on it. A normal dog==yeah once is enough! A GSP, especially a male------

My female never got skunked but she found an old gut pile. She jumped up in the car and my wife and I just looked at each other. Fortunately, the ranch owner had an old Irish setter and knew the tomato juice trick. Took two soapings and rinses and we still rode home with the windows down but we got home without killing her.

RIP, old girl. We miss you every day!

Tomato juice absolutely did not work for me, all it really did was make my already red Vizsla even redder. The odor was not diminished a bit........

My daughter told me about the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap recipe after she used it on her Jack Russell and said the smell disappeared almost right away.

I find it really amazing that these hunting dogs can keep right on hunting and finding pheasants after getting a snoot-full of this stinky stuff but they do it.

Cooter Brown is correct.

Here in central Indiana, Neutroleum Alpha may be obtained from/thru the local County Extension Office. Note: This product is NOT to be used on the dog!

Here is one link of many . . .

For what it's worth: From Popular Science Aug. 1995, chemist Paul Krebaum provided the recipe for a bathing concoction to remove skunk scent from a dog. Mix together one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, one quarter cup of baking soda, and one teaspoon of liquid soap. Bathe your pet in this solution and rinse with tap water. Krebaum warned that there is no way to store this potion. "If you put the ingredients in a bottle, the whole thing would explode."

Take the tomato juice, mix with vodka and enjoy a drink when you're through bathing the dog.

My border collie got skunked on three different occasions. Tomato juice is a myth! The above mentioned hydrogen peroxide mix did a great job. I saw this recently on "The Myth Busters" t.v. program, the hydrogen peroxide mix was the only one to work.

My dog got sprayed 3 times in one summer and the only thing that worked for us was Zyme Away.
We had some already mixed up in a spray bottle and when we sprayed (after a bath) her down it killed the smell. If the dog gets wet the smell will be there a little so just spray again.

The dog slept with me every night before and after the polecat meetings.

Stop sending him to the gentleman's club with singles. Oh, wait, you said polecat, not pole cat. Nevermind.

Reminds me of the time at work a fellow worker went into the bathroom to do his business, when leaving he sprayed a pine sented room deodorizer in there, the next guy walked in right behind him and came out quickly saying " good grief someone crapped a christmas tree in here"!!

Our dogs got sprayed by a skunk late one night recently...of course, the vet wasn't open, so we tried everything we could think of. Tomato juice (and even soup) doesn't work...nor does repeated shampooing. When the vet opened, we called and he recommended "Nature's Miracle" which we bought at Petco. That stuff works! Plus, they also have products to use on your carpets, furniture, etc. (When they got sprayed, our dogs immediately ran into the house through the pet door and began rubbing on the carpet.) After one wash with the "Nature's Miracle" the dogs only had a very faint odor of skunk, and by the next day it was gone.

Pet supply stores sell a product called "Skunk Off". It comes as both a spray and shampoo and works pretty good.
