Is it as simple as lifting off the last bit of spring over the small end of the rod? Thanks for any help.

the end is threaded. use a pair of locking pliers and push down the spring with your hand. put the locking plier to hold the spring in place while you remove the nut. MAKE SURE THE PLIERS ARE ON TIGHT.

take the correct sized socket and then remove the bolt at the end. unscrew and then using your fingers to push and hold the spring down, release the pliers. put in new spring and then using finger press down spring till you can start bolt.

Make sure to wear eye protection!!!!!

Washmp9...I don't see a nut. Both ends are round. Is the small round end part of a threaded shaft that goes into the guide rod?

Are you trying to put a new (OEM) spring in the recoil assembly, or are you trying to put a different weight spring in the recoil assembly?

Just curious...I was wondering why not buy a whole new assembly, unless you are trying to change the spring weight.

HM2 Ken...Yes to both. My first thought was to just replace with an OEM spring on the original guide rod. But after looking at prices, I can get the complete setup for $6+change @ Midway or SW. But I'd like to know how the spring is removed.
Ken...where did you serve as a corpsman? I was one as well and served mainly @ Parris Island.

Hey, Bob...

I did basic and corps school at San Diego, then OR Tech at Corpus Christi (OJT) for a year, Optician Tech at Williamsburg for 6 months, and then last two years as POIC of Eye Clinic at Cherry Point, NC. Also stood duty in ER on weekends. There were 10,000 marines on the base, and I think 9,999 of them came through the ER every weekend to get sewed up, etc...they liked to drink and fight!
