How fast does a luge go ?

I saw an article that said 140 kph. 160 kph is about 100 miles per hour. It seems it was fast enough that the stop was sudden. Article said the track has had many high speed crashes.

It was just reported on another site that he was going 144 KPH when he hit the post. That's 88 MPH.

I never clocked my spit...

That's what I was thinking when I saw the thread.

I never knew it was spelled that way.

I did start to wonder about spitting one out the window of the car and the speed I was traveling in relation to the current temperature, elevation, spin of the earth, tidal forces, sunspots, signs of the Zodiac and the pattern of the black pepper that I put on my gravy and biscuits in the morning.

However, it can all be blamed on global warming.
He wouldn't have hit the post if the globe wasn't warming.

Heard a report on the radio that the unfortunate fellow was killed in the crash. Very sad, work all your life to make the Olympics and get die in practice.

I was watching the news earlier today and they showed the video of him crashing and hitting the pole. Between seeing and hearing him hit the pole, my guess would be he might have died on impact. It is a very sad deal.

NBC has been showing the crash all morning. Very hard to watch and sad. I don't understand why there isn't some sort of catch netting over the curves. At 90 mph, maybe it wouldn't have made any difference.

Tony Benshoof set the record in 2001 at 86.6 mph. No room for error it would seem. I agree about the nets.

They've been saying this course could produce speeds in excess of 95mph. That's way too fast if you have absolutely no control and are wearing only spandex.

They said on the news padding was added to the post. At 90+ mph you would need a lot of padding.

At 88mph padding won't matter. The impact of his internal organs suddenly stopping up against the inside of his body would still kill him, at least injure severely.

Then again, at 88MPH, his flux capacitor should have kicked in.

And for the record, I think it was inappropriate to show the crash on the news. But that's just me.
