I got to wondering the other day how many different J frame models S&W has produced? Since I have time right now I started doing some research; reading old magazine articles and such. I'm not finished but here is what I have so far.

I like your table above. I got a word doc but it won't attach (error) and when I copy and paste the columns get all mixed up. I have adjusted font nothing works.

cool chart , thanks . how about 1 that covers the other sizes by that i mean all . thanks , kenny

I count 31 numbered J frames in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson volume 4. Starting with the model 30 and ending with the model 940. Also throw in a few oddballs like the model 032, 042, and the model 43C. There are in nine different calibers as well: 22lr, 22MRF, 32 S&W Long, 32 Mag, 327, 38 S&W, 38 S&W Spl, 357 Mag, and 9mm.

Model numbers

Let us look at when model numbers started!
The "30" model numbers were J frames(except 39)
The teen model numbers were the K frames
The "20" model numbers were the N frames
Now it starts to get connnfuzzzing! 40, 42, 042, 032, 43, 51, 60, 63,(etc) J frame - 45, 56, 547, 647, K frame - 520 N frame - L frame, no logic - then comes stainless guns, #6 prefix in the model number of all frames - and today we have the strange metals with model numbers hard to follow and then we have the autos(dah)! I need another cup of coffee!

The last one should be a 942

ParadiseRoad,
Are you the creator of these charts at LuckyGunner?

As folks started to point out, there are several errors and omissions

...no...

...I found them online and passed them on...

...they could be a lot better...especially if they included all calibers in each frame size...

Needs a Mod. 25 N Frame.

Needs both the 25 and the 25-2. The former is 45 Colt and the latter is 45 ACP. Also let's not forget the 57 & 58 in .41 Mag.

Oops just noticed that the list .38 & .357 only.
