I count 8 that I have given other than in testimony.

The first would be at school from the beginning through High-school.
Boy Scouts.

The second would be the Cub Scouts.

The third would be my marriage to my loving wife of 46 years.

The fourth was when I was commissioned a 2LT in the US Army on my graduation day at Oklahoma State University.

The fifth would be my many Freemason oaths.

The sixth would be as a Special Agent with the United States Treasury.

The seventh would be when I was appointed an Assistant Inspector General in the Army.

The eighth when I was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar.

A pledge and a vow are closer in meaning, to the point of being synonyms. They mean "a solemn promise to do something."

Oath, while close in meaning, typically has an additional sense of invoking the divine that you give your word about something.

A vow is an oath, but an oath is only a vow if the divine being is the recipient of the promise and is not merely a witness.

I had to get sworn in every two years when I served six terms as an elected constable. I also have to be sworn in everytime we change sheriff's administrations and I've served three sheriff's.

I mouth 'oaths'...

I mouth 'oaths' a lot more than I should but REAL oaths I take very seriously and are not to be broken. Besides typical oaths such as the 'loyalty oath' as a government contractor I made a few special promises to my Maker that so far I've kept.

Have done my best to never break my word given to anyone. When I think about oaths I think they have made me who I am.

I uttered one this AM when I stumped my toe getting out of bed.
That was the first one today---there will be others.
Know what your talking about---but---it had to be said.
Blessings

With the help of the members here, I have added two more events in my life that I overlooked and added more to the subject title.

At school from the beginning through High-school.
Boy Scouts.
When I got into Law Enforcement.

I take defending the Constitution to heart. Just because im no longer in LE--doesnt mean my oath has ended. I hope Ethan Allen, Patrick Henry, Paul Revere and John Hancock dont mind me helping to carry the ball awhile? :D

With further reflection and the help of the members here, my count is now at 8 times. Now that's a lot of swearing on record.

The rest of my "swearing" record is nothing to be proud off. :o

To the OP: when you took the oath you list last, does it absolve you of following all of the prior oaths? Not that I haven't met an honest lawyer, but.........

There are two types of people that keep our society from anarchy. They are The Thin Blue Line that stand on that wall at night and protect us. The other are the lawyers who we go to when we seek justice in our lives and no one else can get it for us.

Those two groups along with the teachers are the first to be killed in a society that has no law or a society that subverts the law.

I trust the word of my fellow lawyers more than any other group of people other than my family. Trust in others can sometimes be unfounded, but not being able to place your trust in others would make life unfit for living.
