I am new to semi autos and I just recently purchased a shield 40 and absolutely love it, but I am now an M&P addict and am looking to buy my second semi auto. I found a used M&P 9 full. it has the Apex DCAEK kit + USB installed. It also has Bowie Tactical sights w/ a Trijicon front sight and serrated black rear sights and comes with 2 17 rnd mags. and original box. The guy says a couple of thousand rounds has been put through it and He wants just under $500.

Is that a fair price and should I expect some excessive wear on the gun?

thanks

Myself I'd rather a NIB pistol for that price and know some joe snuffy didn't take internals apart and mess with them. I never like buying moded weapons. I'd rather buy stock and know what I have for sure. If it was good enough deal like 400 then yeah or if he had original parts along with it.

Well, my FS .40 M&P has over 16,00 rounds downrange in USPSA/IDPA matches and it still runs great and looks fabulous. Buy it and have fun!

there is an M&P floating around on the internet that has over 62,000 rounds and it's still shooting.

these things aren't expensive, instead of a used one for $500 i'd just buy myself a new one and not worry about what has or has not been done to it.

You're paying more than base M&P9 retail price. I don't know what your sales tax and transfer fee considerations are, if any. You are trading that premium and "a couple of thousand rounds usage" for sights and the Apex kit, installed.

If the new parts were well-installed, and if I wanted those parts in the first place, I'd buy the pistol contingent on firing a couple of hundred rounds first.

If logistics made that impossible, I'd pass unless I personally knew the seller. There's just too much chance the parts were user/poorly installed, and that's the reason for the sell-off.

YMMV.

Just talked to him again and he is the 2nd owner. The first owner is a LEO so no telling how many rounds truly been through it and it has some holster wear. He is willing to go to $470 but I am leaning towards a new one. Academy has one for $500+tax new.

Still undecided though

Couple thousand is just getting broke in. Second owner ....that's a so-so and makes me wonder about "just couple thousand rounds".

Sounds like you found a better deal,I'd go with the newer one and then you know for sure what it's been through. Any problems and S&W has your back and no questions asked. Their service is OUTSTANDING.

30 more plus tax for new and your stuck? I would not be. I have no issue buying a used gun - I have plenty of times but for a few bucks more why not get the one you know the reliability of every round fired (new) before you start carrying it and trusting your life with it.

Just my .02

I appreciate the advice. Y'all made some good points. I'm going to buy new. Not that much cost savings buying used and the warranty is appealing. Can't wait to add to the collection.

Botach defense had the LE model with night sights and 3 mags for $399 a couple weeks ago. I got one to add to my collection.

$399 with night sights? I've seen them for $455, but never $399 with night sights.... Is that what you paid?

Yep, that's the SKU for the M&P9 with night sights. I think it's a mistake, a $56 mistake, but if you can get one I'd be all over it! :D

If you think it's worth it buy used. I would rather have a NIB for myself but I am in a decent financial position. I might mention that I own a Hi Point 40 cal S&W and it's a good shooter so it's not snobbery just personal choice.

Wise decision. The only time I bought used was a Ruger GP100 with a half lug that was made in 1986 which was its first run.

Provided the gun is in mint condition and the add on's are things you would want anyway it's not an unfair price. Certainly not a bargain though. I don't think it speaks well for the plastic guns in general that most guys are shying away from a used one. Just because it's used. Mine is used, and so is yours. Are you worried about it? Would everyone be as concerned if it was a 20 year old quality steel auto or revolver?

Forgot this . . . dunno if you care about S&W's lifetime service policy, but its only available to the original purchaser.

The lifetime service policy is worth it. I just had to send a M&P 40 Pro back for repair, didn't cost me one cent. If you buy used, and something goes wrong, the repairs are all on your dime. Just my opinion.

I have never had S&W deny or charge me anything for a used 3rd gen or M&P S&W I have sent to them for repair work. They have always took care of it at NO CHARGE to me.

I think the point is buying used from an unknown party. If I knew the person selling and it's history,I'd jump on it.

Trust isn't what it used to be. A man's word and his handshake.
