Hello from Munich (Bavaria),

I have one M629-2, Cal .44, 3 ', SerialNo. BBN0414.
S&W informed me on request that the revolver 11/2/1988 was produced.
*BBN04141036108287*

I am interested in how many revolvers of this type were made.

I have no idea how many were made, as there were a couple more iterations after yours. Mine is a dash 4 called a Backpacker and there are some later ones called the Trail Boss. I really like mine with light loads, not so much with full magnums! I just shot mine last weekend with .44 Special loads. So much fun! Enjoy yours.

I have two 3" 629-1s from the original LH run. I've heard 2500 and 5000, not familiar with the later -2s.

When I owned one of those I was interested and I recollect numbers in that realm. They're only fun with .44 Special ammunition. I'm not a fan and I don't think they're anything special in the collectors market BICBW. Worth around $900 to $1000, more or less. I got $950 for mine back in the day when I happily moved it on to a silly friend. ;)

I have an M629-5 "Mountain Back Packer..." I semi-regularly shoot .44Mags out of her... more than Specials. Not bad with a pair of svelte leather gloves... It's a go-to woods gun for when we are in the Nantaha National Forest and packs and pulls very well!

Paired here with his little brother the M24-3 Lew Horton Special...

I've got a story about these short barreled 629s. Our friend was leash dog tracking a gut shot bull moose up in the north woods with the hunter and a guide. The hunter was unarmed since it was Sunday. They thought enough time had passed that they would find the bull expired. They were wrong. The moose J hooked and bedded down. When they passed, the moose jumped up and charged. The tracker hit the ground and covered up her dog. The moose ran right over her then stopped for another charge. The guide drew his 3 inch barreled 629 and dropped him before he could charge again. That's saying a lot for an easy to pack hand gun.
