my father in law and i were talking about the imposing gun regulations. we both have guns so it was not an anti vs me conversation, but we were wondering how much ammo an average enthusiast goes through per year. we tried to find how much ammo was sold last year, but that seemed to elude us. i know i didn't get to shoot nearly as much as i wanted and barely got to fire just over 1250 rds.

maybe give an average of what you shot and what you think may have been shot in the U.S. during the year of 2011.

Hmmm... never really kept up with it. Had to do some thinking.
Best guess, between 5,000 and 6,000 rounds per years.

And on this board, I know that's nowhere near the top.

I keep track of all my purchases, firings and reloads, so my data is good. This year it came to 3600+ rounds, of which about 1700 were centerfire and the rest .22 rimfire. The year before was about 3200, and 3000 the year before.

Ny wife has taken up the sport, so that added to the mix this year. We belong to a club and shoot indoors in the Winter. Our Summer camp has 2 ranges, so that gives us the ability to practice since we're there frequently.

Just a guess but somewhere around 1500-2000 rounds most of it .22 Rimfire the rest a mix of various centerfire rounds mostly pistol/revolver,Maybe 200 or so rounds of centerfire rifle mixed between 30/06 & 5.56,Would like to fire more but have to travel a good way to the outdoor range & prefer not to shoot much at the indoor one close to Me.

Last year was a good year, I went through about 30,000 rounds. Things were pretty hectic this year and I only went though about 1/2 that.

It matters. If I take a training course or 2 that requires 600 rounds or so my round count jumps. Excluding that, I probably shoot 1500 recreationally. I don't include .22 pistol or rifle league.

You have to consider that the style of training and practice dictates how many rounds are fired and all are not created equal. Firing off a box of ammo quickly at the end of the range day doesn't mean that those 50 rounds were quality shooting. Shooting twice to body mass and reassessing, then repeating takes a while to go through a box of ammo.

You have to remember that those of us that inhabit these boards are not "typical" shooters. The guys that come through my gun club during the annual sight-in days probably put 10-20 rounds through their rifles a year. I don't think anything about shooting a 50 round match each week for score and also shooting a couple of practice matches.

My wife and I will shoot 300 rounds every time we take the handguns to the range and we go once or twice a month during a bad year. We run into people that plan on shooting half a box and then putting the pistol in the top drawer on their dresser to be retrieved in another couple of years.

Right now since I don't really have the time to shoot like I used to, I shoot about 7K rounds per year.

i was figuring on this board being higher than most people. all of the shootings going on got us talking about ammo and ow much we would like to have saved/how fast it would go off of shelves...

i was just kind of curious of what the average yearly was for those who like to shoot a lot as a hobby.

thanks for the input so far!!!

I goto the range about once a week and I average about 200 rounds a session.

A lot more....

100 rounds has been suggested as a one time purchase for ammo. 100 rounds would only get me started on one session at the range. I don't get to the range often enough and I would like to shoot even more. I reload my own and as long as I can afford it and find it, I'm going to keep a big stock of ammo. Competitive shooters would scoff at the amount of ammo I use. They shoot way more.

100 rounds 45 acp, 50 rounds 380, 100-200 rounds 22lr per trip. 1-2 trips to club per week. starting to reload 45 acp.

Last year approximately 8000-9000 rounds, mixture of 9mm and 45 ACP. I did not shoot as much in 2012 as I have in previous years.

I shoot about 12,000 rounds a year, 2 to 3 times to range a week it adds up fast add another 3,000 rimfire. I have 12 center fire pistols, so every ones get a night out. At the current cost of ammo, I will be cutting down this year. I don't know about you, but I am keeping 6,000 rounds as back up. Good luck to those buying their first gun after the shooting, there not really any ammo of quality out there at this time. One other thing I took up using a Crossbow this year does that count?
