What is the rough cost for a barrel swap on a S&W revolver?

I'm considering sending it to S&W. Any idea what they charge?

I had just called them the other day on just this item, looks like 100 labor + or - for a straight barrel swap and a four month turnaround

I had a barrel swap done a while back.. gun came back completely rebuilt. Barrel, hammer, trigger, springs and screws.. $190..it was a 66 with a cracked forcing cone.. might have been discounted for that.

Ok, thanks for the help. I've been surprised that every local "gunsmith" I've called so far can't do it. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to me to mail it in.

Thanks again!

Alex Hamilton, who owns 10-Ring Precision, in San Antonio, TX, replaced a 6-1/2 with a 4 inch barrel on a Model 29-2 for me a couple of months ago for $70.00, plus shipping, of course. He actually had the work done before I called him the morning after I shipped to make sure that the gun arrived as scheduled! I had the gun back three days after I sent it to him.

He is a super guy and a perfectionist. He'll do it right. He is a member of the American Pistolsmiths Guild.

You should be aware that barrel changes sometimes are more than remove part/install part. Some degree of fitting may be required. Depending upon the source/condition of your different barrel, it may get interesting.

My local GS has two of my S&W revolvers now for a barrel swap. I took in the barrels and guns and he charges $40.00 each . That includes any setback, recutting forcing cone ect. if necessary. Does an excellant job on everything.

Wow, that's cheap. I called my local gun store and he said no one in the area does pistol work that detailed. That said, I did talk to a gunsmith north of me where his wife (she answered the phone) said I need to bring the gun in before they can say for sure they can do it. I guess the question is whether it's worth a couple hours on the road to possibly save $100 in shipping.

Thanks for all the help! I'm leaning towards Alex at Tenrings because I've heard of him before and was thinking about getting it cut for moon clips anyway.

Ford's Refinishing in Crystal River, FL changed one for me a bit over a year ago. I took the revolver and the replacement barrel there and their gunsmith (Jim) changed it in about an hour. I don't remember the exact price but, it was less than $100. He said pinned barrels were easier than the current crush fit ones.

I had Alex put a 6 1/2" on a 38/44 HD that had a buldged 4". He did some other work on it and the total was $190. It took about 5 weeks, but it was over the holidays. He's about 30 mins from me.

I just got the quote back from Alex - $140 for the barrel swap. Not exorbitant at all IMO, but after factoring in shipping and the cost of the barrel, I'm thinking everybody who says it makes more sense to just buy a new gun might be on to something...

Thanks again for the help. This forum has rapidly become my favorite place to talk about guns.

What kind of barrel do you need?
