So I was interested in a new pistol(CZ), I called a GS in my state (kinda far, but they carry a ton of CZs) and the person said he was getting a bunch shipped in and could put my name on a list...I ended up going to the range and shooting a different pistol my buddy had that I liked a ton more. Now there are GS that are much closer to me than the original place. I was thinking of calling the GS and asking to be removed from the list, but I also feel sort of bad not going to them.

What do you guys think? Should I go the extra distance (35-40min) just because Im inconveniencing these guys etc?

Because the dude was super nice, smaller shop and now Im kind of backing out on said list etc. Just inconvenienced them

Putting your name on a list usually means there is demand for the firearm you want, and he's giving you the opportunity to see it or buy it before it's randomly put out for sale.

If it's an in-demand item, I'm sure he'll sell it with or without you. The dealer is not ordering X number of guns based off some list generated from a phone call. He's ordering guns based on what he think will sell.

Another thing to consider is you have no idea when he is getting these guns in. Could be two months from now.

I may be misunderstanding -

After telling far away gun store you wanted Pistol A you went to the range and shot Pistol B and liked it more, yes? So you'd be telling the far away store "no go" not because they're further away but because you don't want the gun, yes? And you wouldn't want the gun even if they were 10 minutes away from your home, yes?

If you changed your mind on the gun I suppose the thing to do is call the far away store and tell them you've changed your mind. If there's "a list" someone else would (I presume) pick up the gun instead of you.

I do a fair amount of gun buying and tend to do it from the same stores. I'm sure there have been times I could have gotten a gun cheaper if I hunted around, but getting benefits like scrounging around the back room or finding a gun the store had stashed away, or that they were going to send for repair but sell cheap kind of balances things out.

Or you can just buy both guns. Easier said than done. Then, if you still like gun B better than A, you can probably get close to what you paid for it. If there's a waiting list on a type or brand gun and you have a gently used one, that shouldn't be a problem selling it.
Or just call the store back and thank him but take your name off the list for someone else to get on it.

I guess Im torn if I should still take the ride and give them my business. I was going to make the trip for pistol A. So why not for pistol B...that is where Im having a hard time figuring out what to do

Don’t worry about the list thing, just take your name off. It’s not like he special ordered the gun just for you.

Buying gun B at the shop…are the closer shops big box stores or small shops too? I’d definitely make the drive to support a small shop but if the closer store is also a small shop, I’d go there to save time and gas.

As someone who has worked at gun shops part time for many years I can tell you that it’s not a big deal.

Some gun shops will not put people on a list because people don’t show or call.

As stated prior, if it was a special order, it would be a different ball game entirely. But then again, you would have to put money down so you would be obligated to buy the gun or lose your down payment.

Your concern is admirable. Just call them and be done with it.

It's not like you had them place a special order and then backed out. Do they carry the gun you decided you liked better? If so, maybe they have a good price on it, or good enough to rest your conscience.

It isn't like you made a special order with them, that would be a different story entirely. You are just on a waiting list, if they ever call you simply tell them et that time you will pass. This happens all the time and they don't expect you to call to take your name off the list.

I’m ALWAYS in favor of keeping my word. Exceptions exist, but they are rare. This personal policy forces me to be very deliberate about what I say! I had a very successful career. All of my close relationships are deeply steeped in trust. Sometimes it’s the small things that really matter.
