I didn't join the USAF to get discounts or be lauded by people. I joined to serve and thought it'd make a good career for me. I was right and have worked for the USAF for 35 years now; 5 years active duty, 30 as a civilian.

I have asked for a discount now and then because it made a significant difference on the price of a couple of large ticket items. Otherwise, I don't go looking for discounts.

Today I saw this picture and it meets my feelings exactly:

Every day I pray; "God please help me live a life worthy of the price our fallen heroes have paid." I don't always succeed, but I'm trying to be better. There's a reason my avatar and tag line never change.

Back when I was doing collection work I was interviewing a gentleman I figured was a Vietnam veteran because of the hat he was wearing and his age. It turned out he was. I told him I was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and thanked him for his service. He said I was the first person after 40 years to thank him. That really floored me.

It occurs to me that the kind of Americans worth fighting for include those who offer a sincere and well-intentioned "thank you" to those of us who served, and I never begrudge them that. No, we didn't serve expecting to be thanked, but it's nice that on days like today, we receive acknowledgement for it.

Happy Veterans Day, everyone! And thank you for your service. Hand salute!:)

I find it interesting, that some folks have said "thanks for your service" to me. I remember back in the 60's after coming back from deployments (Navy - Tokin Gulf - three 9 month deployments) where some had signs saying "dog and sailors keep off the grass" that actually hung off the Golden Gate bridge. How times have changed and it's good to see the American people have changed their views or woke up and smelled the coffee.

Maybe 9-11 was the wake up call that brought them to their
senses?

So to all of you who Really served, THANK YOU!!
Don't sell yourself short. You served. Just like everyone else who signed up, you wrote a blank check up to and including your life for your country. Just because you weren't called to actually give your life, doesn't make you less of a veteran.

USAFSS.....6950th security group.....1963 - 1968 RAF Chicksands, England

Today, i DO NOT want to hear "thank you for your service"....that's just another nervous tick like "no problem" & "have a nice day"

i would have wanted to hear that back then when i returned home.....but i didnt.....

I think some of us find patriotism at a younger age...welcome home!
