Next month I will be receiving the 2nd half of my enlistment bonus so I plan on treating myself to something worthwhile. I want to spend between $1500 and $2000.

So far I have narrowed it down to a few choices including a S&W of some type.

Any suggestions, and or pics of a Smith in that range that would be worth owning? I do not want or have any safe queens, so buying a museum stash away piece is out of the question. I want to have fun!!

Thanks for your opinions! By the way, the wife won't know

well, I'm kind of leaning towards a single purchase. Something that I normally could not afford dropping $2k on in one shot.

There are "lots" of very nice Smith & Wessons out there such as a Model 29-2 or earlier version in the 6-1/2" barrel.

One of the Many Model 25s in either the -2 or -5 versions with a 6 or 6-1/2" barrels would make an excellent second choice for a Big Bore revolver.

Anyone of a number of Model 19-3 or earlier versions with the 2-1/2" or a 3" if you're really lucky or even one of the 6 inch guns would also be Dandy.

And, a Model 27-2 or earlier version with either a 3-1/2" or 5" barrel.

A Model 48-2 or earlier version; especially, if you can find it with the extra .22LR cylinder, and the 8-3/8" barrel would be my choice for this one.

Now, add one of the fine Model 41s - any of the versions would be fine here because you can always add an extra barrel or two at a later date - and you'd have a well rounded list to choice from.

MSRP on the PC CarryCOMP 629 is nearly $1300
But that is a NEW one with the dreaded lock! I advised to "max out at a -4", which means 629-1, -2, -3, or -4. IMHO thems the best, since they have forged hammer and trigger and no lock. But, to each his own!

Here's a 629-4 snub:

I voted colt SAA. But if you really want some excitement, you could buy $2,000 worth of GM stock right now and MAYBE in 3 years make $50,000! (You also might lose most of it in 3 weeks.)

If you're seriously looking for Smith & Wesson carry revolver, don't ignore something like a 640-1 .357. And after you carry even that one a while you'll probably wish you'd gotten an airweight. I LOVE my N frames, but they are a serious hunk of iron to tote around and conceal all the time, even if you're a bigger person. You asked for my opinion and it's worth what you're paying for it

If he's looking for a "Shooter" - which is what he stated - he's likely to blow all of his money one just a single Colt. My choice for a SA would be one of the older(I know "older" sounds strange; for so new a firearm) Ruger Vaqueros in any one of the several calibers it was offered in. As they are no longer in production, they will increase in value but can still be fired with "any" modern ammo and enjoyed as long as it is taken care of and it will not loose any value.

If I had $2k to burn I'd invest some of it in a 625 Mountain gun in .45 Colt. I'd use some of the rest to buy a nice K-frame .357, probably a 66. What's left, and I'm hoping that would be about 1/3 of the total, would go into ammo.

Better get the Assault Rifle now- revolvers and 1911's will be available till the end of the Republic.

The new production Colt's Combat Elite is a very nice 1911. You should be able to get one for around $900.00. You could then pick-up a nice used 3" model 65 or 13, S&W revolver for around $350-$450. Tax and all you would still have enough to get that model 629 snubby.

That would be a good rounded collection, until you decide you need something else.
