I always thought Ky was a big tobacco state, you would think a deer would rather smoke a Camel and isnt Jim Bean made in Ky, what else would they drink.

A friend of mine had a Private deer hunting farm here in Ohio. And CDW was of great concern to every deer hunter as well as Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

I forget which state it was but the deer herds (at least the privately owned ones) were almost wiped out. The state was possibly Minnesota or Wisconsin. But my friend contributed 4 does and one buck to rebuilding their herd. My joke was he only contributed "One Buck", (that contribution set him back about $3000!)

Fortunately, Ohio never had any confirmed cases of CWD! As to depressed deer....I think most scientists called the symptom "Lethargic".

OK, I'm still waiting for the recipes.

Depressed venison stew? Roast CWD with potatoes and carrots? Sauteed chronically wasted liver and onions? Lethargic chili?

OP can't make this stuff up. Doesn't mean I can't.

If anyone's interested in what the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources really has to say about CWD in Kentucky, click here.

Note that they say, "Since 2002, KDFWR has tested more than 30,000 deer and elk for CWD; all results have been negative. CWD has not been found in the State of Kentucky."

Kentucky also has very stringent rules about what Kentucky hunters who hunt deer and other cervids in other states cannot bring back into Kentucky.

Quoting from the KDFWR site:

"If you plan to hunt outside the state of Kentucky for cervids (white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, caribou, or moose) please know the requirements of what you can bring back with you on your return. Hunters can now only bring back the following:
  • Meat – bone in or deboned
  • Antlers
  • Antlers that are attached to a clean skull plate
  • A clean skull
  • Finished taxidermy product
  • The hide
Hunters shall not import a cervid carcass or carcass parts that has any part of the spinal column or head into Kentucky. These requirements are put into place to help slow the movement of CWD into Kentucky."

I would think greatest sign of CWD would be a deer that is just hide and bones and hardly able to stand. CWD is the same thing as SSD isn't it? Seriously Sick Deer.
I must say I never saw a deer with a pack of cigarettes or a pocket for that matter on a deer. But I never hunted the deep woods of Kentucky so what do I know.
Slow the movement of CWD? I would think they move really slow if they have CWD.

yea guys i am completely serious,,,,, yes i like to trying lightening the mood some,,,,,, i havent hunted in many years so i dont keep track of it,,,, i was on several hunting sights back then and it was a running joke about the depression part,,,, over seeveral years i have shot 100s of deer,,, had land owner and disability tags so i didnt have limit but my freezer always got full,,,,, that is the first thing i watch is how they walked,,, if they walked a little staggering i would look really close of physical condition,,, see ribs very very good chance of them being sick,,,, i havent shot to many to put them out but i have shot some and dragged them off to the ditch,,,, if i did i made dang sure they looked really bad,,,,,
it just amazes me how our people sitting behind a desk could come up with this,,,,,to this day i have NOT figured out how to tell if a deer is depressed,,, just makes no sense,,,
kinda figured you guys would want something to help ease the craziness of the world,,,,, just something to think about and ponder about,,,,,
i havent checked it in years to see if thats 1 of the symptoms or not but i guess i will have to check it out and do some research
i know that you can not cross state lines least here in western ky,,, back then,,, with a harvested deer because of it,,,,
and ot be honest do they even worry abou it anymore

its called a fanny pack that they keep ,,, since its ky,,, their cigs,,, home made hooch,,,, percocet,, ridlin and crack all in,,,, does have to have long straps to get around their waist if not it goes around the neck,,,,LOL
sorry couldnt resist LOL

the depressed suicidal deer around here just wander into the road late at night...lol

CWD is nasty stuff... Here in Nebraska it has made hunting a bit more of a challenge... you actually have to get off the front porch and walk to the treeline... or just drive around and look for the depressed ones.

Let see if I remember some symptoms of depression. Feeling sad most days, trouble sleeping, no appetite, feeling tired all the time feelings of uselessness, unable to concentrate, isolating, poor personal care (showering etc.) no sex drive.

So if a deer is depressed, not eating, not running the herd, walking with it's head down, laying down in the brush. holding your gun to it's head. running in front of cars and trucks,
