I'm a woman, a pretty recent first-time gun purchaser, and a new member of both the NRA and RMGO (Rocky Mountain Gun Owners).
My path to firearm ownership was a long one, actually. I grew up quite liberal (am one no longer) and I think I picked up on the standard liberal Democrat anti-gun view. I wasn't against gun ownership, it's just that the things freaked me out and I was too sheepish to own one, in spite of that I've lived in some high crime areas which looking back at it was rather stupid of me.
In the past months, the Democrat-dominated Colorado state legislature (they control ALL of it including the governor's office) began a huge gun grab. That set me off quite a bit and it definitely contributed to my deciding to purchase my first gun in early February of 2013. I had been considering a concealed carry weapon off and on and decided to take the plunge. I question whether or not in part that my visits to the re-opened Century Aurora movie theater affected me in this manner. The theater re-opened in January, 2013 and I began going there regularly to support the community and the theater ever since. I have read a good amount of witness and police testimony about what James Holmes did in Theater 9 that night, and I have sat in that theater and watched several movies and have pondered the incident. Aside from being teary-eyed and very angry in that process, I came to realize that concealed carry could have saved lives in that theater, and that is something I will continue to carry with me to the grave. One thing I can definitely say influenced me by visiting #9 is my decision to purchase a Crimson Trace grip for my Smith & Wesson 640 Centennial. Perhaps I shouldn't say "influenced" me; it was THE reason I decided to make the purchase.
Due to the ban attempts by the Colorado state legislature AND the Pelosi-led feds, I bumped up my plans of purchasing a semiauto centerfire rifle and bought an Arsenal Arms SLR 640CR, which is a Bulgarian-made AK rifle and fires 5.56/.223 ammo. I've yet to buy rounds for it with the shortage and prices.
These asshats and my pondering the dangers of what they're trying to do (visiting Theater 9 and having it rubbed in your face is quite a motivator), I've turned into what liberal Democrats and Socialists sneeringly call a "gun nut," and I'm damned proud of it.
Being stuck here in the City and County of Denver means I am on a lengthy waiting list to turn in my CCW application paperwork. When CCW laws were first passed in Colorado, Denver tried to opt out (unsurprisingly) citing "special circumstances," namely gang problems. State law didn't allow them to do that, so instead they stall and harass gun owners by forcing you to get on an appointment list. So I got on the list in late February and was given an appointment in late July, while literally the counties next door have a walk-in policy, I sit and rot.
Thanks, Denver!
Thankfully, Colorado house Democrats speared their own attempt to repeal the public college campus portion of the CCW law. As soon as this snail's pace process is done and I get my permit, I WILL be carrying on my campus (I am a returning adult college student). Colorado law does not allow teachers or other staff to ask if we are carrying a gun; only campus police can ask that question, and I love it!

This is my conceal carry S&W 640 before I put on the new Crimson Trace grip.
