I was in my local gun store looking for ammunition for my new Shield 9mm a while back. The shop suggested HPR in 124gr. It is loaded with Hornaday bullets, is very clean burning and comes in 50 rd. boxes. I purchased it and have been carrying it with no problems. I looked up the company on the internet. Anyone using their ammo for SD?

You can buy HORNADY with Hornady bullets................

I thought about using it and wrote them a letter via snail mail. The letter came back because of "invalid address."
Looks weird to me...

I stick to Black Hills for SD.

Practice/train with whatever you want. Stick to major manufacturers for your defensive ammo needs. Black Hills, Cor-Bon, CCI, Federal, Hornaday, Speer, Remington and Winchester.

We've burned tons of Fiochhi .223 ball equivilant. Accurate, reliable but burns dirty. Don't know how their pistol ammo is.

There have been and still are a slew of boutique ammo makers. Some produce quality ammo, some don't. Some adhere to SAAMI standards, some don't. Some will stand behind their product and have integrity and insurance, some don't. Few have the resources or the standing to help you out if there are issues with your ammo in a shooting.

HPR is a new ammo company making unknown quality ammo. I personally refuse to trust any unproven ammo for SD purposes, especially any load using Hornady XTP bullets.

BTW, how many rounds of HPR ammo have you put through your gun before trusting it? Rule of thumb is minimum 200 rounds with zero malfunctions.

I was unaware that any ammunition company would stand up in court with me if I am involved in a shooting. Voluntarily anyway.

Kinda depends upon what the issue is. There was a case in the southwest part of my state where the state crime lab "proved" (by gunshot residue comparison) a shooting by an off duty officer didn't happen at close range. On appeal, the ammo company was able to provide documentation that the state tests were inaccurate because the powder used in the test ammo wasn't the same as that in the ammo used in the shooting. Different lots of ammo, different powders, different residue results produced an overturned verdict. (actual comparison testing done by an independent lab).

For liability reasons, the majors keep detailed records of the production of the various lots of ammunition. In some cases, down to the machine that produced it and who was running it on what shift. They also typically keep exempler samples of each lot.

I kinda doubt many of the boutique makers keep records that detailed. Or, that they have the track records and mantle of authority that folks who win major law enforcement ammo contracts have.

Taking the point to extremes, would you rather go into court having used one of the products by the majors (who may well supply or have supplied the needs of the local law) or Billy Joe Jim Bobs Ninja Death Touch (One touch and you daid!) Ammo? If you don't think there aren't prosecutors who wouldn't try to find a way to use that, google Duke Lacrosse rape.
