HPR Ammo
I'm on a budget and don't reload currently. My GF and I both have .357's and I also have a 9mm and a .45. I've been trying to find some decent SD/carry ammo for them with modern hollow points. The problem is, as much as I'd love to buy boxes and boxes of Buffalo Bore or Double Tap ammo I just can't afford to get enough that I'd feel comfortable shooting and depending on it to perform out of our guns if the SHTF.
I can't stomach $35 for twenty rounds. Even out of her J frame that's four whole cylinders worth of shooting.
However I do like the sounds of $35 for fifty rounds and sometimes even less. I've lately been looking for the Federal HST ammo in 9mm and .45 ACP but no one locally carries it and ordering it online starts to push the price too high for me.
I considered the Fiocchi Extrema loads because they used the XTP bullet I've read so much good about but I then found many reviews saying it was chrono'd at a lot lower than standard velocity repeatedly.
Then the last couple times I've been in Sportsman's Warehouse they've had fifty round boxes of this stuff called HPR somewhere in the $32-35 range depending on calibre. All my favorite calibres including .38 and .357 too. After doing some reading I hear it uses the XTP bullet as well. American made and the rounds look good simply on appearance.
However I'm having a hard time finding any ammo testing on these. Has anyone done this? I found ONE video of their HP ammo in 9mm and .45 ACP being tested on YouTube and it turned out good but that's only one video.
For the record I rolled the dice and bought a box of their .357 158gr HP's. It definitely had more recoil than the Remington 158gr Soft Points I had in it before that. I don't have the means to test it for velocity or expansion though. SEEMS good so far but wondering if anyone else has done or has seen some more extensive testing?
