It was with sadness I just learned that the little Hubig pie factory in New Orleans burned down early Friday morning. For those not familiar with this iconic regional treat, it is a family-owned bakery that has produced individually wrapped snack pies since 1922. The addictive little morsels have been a tradition in the New Orleans/MS Gulf Coast region for generations being sold in many neighborhood groceries, gas stations and convenience stores. They have remained true to the original recipe over the years with very few preservatives and have been produced with fillings such as apple, lemon, chocolate and custard. The lemon has always been my favorite. Accompanied by another old regional favorite, Barq's root beer, a finer treat would be hard to find.

It is not known at this time if they will rebuild or not. Sure hope so. It seems like everday we lose another of our time honored traditions. I suppose it is just a price we pay for the privilege of growing older

I know one of the owners-They WILL rebuild. Sorrowfull time indeed for New Orleans-those little 600 calorie sugar bombs will be missed-Lemon was my favorite.
Bert-do you remember Mrs. Drake's Sandwiches ?????

Never heard of them but they sound good. I checked their website and they have something about the fire and say they expect to start delivering in 2013. The only product an "Angel Investor" package of 12 pies for $50.00 shipped (They will be shipped when they are back in business). Pricey, but I ordered one. I like fried pies and if it helps to keep a good local amarican company in business it's worth it.

You bet, Caj. They were delivered to many old time corner groceries back
when I was a kid. Always liked the Hubigs better though. The grown folks usually were more into the Mrs. Drakes.

Great to hear the pies will be back. Was afraid I would have to go
cold turkey.

My g/f woke me up telling me this horrible news a couple days ago! Strawberry and lemon are my favorites. I need to stock up on some to get through the upcoming shortage!

I haven't had one in years but they sure were good! My favorite is pineapple, followed by apple. They are a breakfast staple of early morning workers or fishermen stopping for gas.
I one media source reported the fire started in the "fry room" there must have been hundreds of gallons of cooking oil there.
I'm happy to hear they will be cranking up again soon!
