Humidor From "The Big D"

Humidor I received from a fellow forumite, "The Big D".

My only experience with humidors was so long ago I don't trust my "hazy" memory. I seem to recall a small wooden box with some kind of plaster or porous ceramic insert under the lid where one could drip water then close. Am I remembering an actual object or are my brain cells that burnt?

I see a football game on so it must be 1300 local. I need to sharpen an axe and chainsaw blade so now I get to combine some of my favorite activities... precision work on edged tools and alcohol!

Don't forget to season your humidor. The wood tends to be dry and will suck humidity like crazy unless it is seasoned.

You will read to take a sponge and rubbing the walls of the humidor down. DON'T DO IT!!!! It will raise the grain of the Spanish cedar, making it rough which can damage delicate wrappers on some cigars.

Get a cup and fill it with hot distilled water or Boveda seasoning packets and put them in your humidor. Let is sit for a week or so. Then remove them and see if it will hold a steady humidity in the 70% rh range for 24 hours. Always use distilled water with your humidifier.

For a good hygrometer go with a Western Digital. They tend to be spot on accurate. They look good and work great.

For humidifiers I still use the silica kitty litter. It is simple, cheap and holds my humidors steady in the 67% rh range. There are some beads you can buy that are also great. There are jells out there that are good at adding humidity but won't draw off excess humidity.

If Big D hasn't used that humidor for awhile for sure you will need to season it or you will struggle keeping the humidity up in the 60-70% rh range.

Sounds like you're remembering a humidification device.

Unfortunately, with the cooler weather on the way, I'll have less outdoor cigar time.

I've got the newest, fandangled, 2 way humidification device on order for it. It's the puck style with a magnetic mount. It goes under the lid. It has excellent reviews and is supposed to add humidity when it's low and draw out excess humidity.

Got my humidification device and hygrometer in today.
The hygrometer was at a discount price because it only reads in celsius. That's okay with me, I have a Garmin remote temperature sensor and according to that 72 degrees fahrenheit is 22 degrees celsius.
The RH was at 69 when I opened the box but dropped 2 percentage points in the time it took me to take the picture.

Arturo Fuente has a ton to choose from, and is easy to find multiple favs in any of their lines. It's also one of my fav brands.

Have you tried the Arturo Fuente Breva Royale? As I understand it, it's like a curlyhead, except in a corona size. Good 30 minute smoke.

Today would've been a good cigar day. Unfortunately, I was busy running errands.
I've got a Montecristo Habano next in line for smokin'.
