Looking at replacing the HVAC system. I would like to not have to mess with this again and get the AC system that will last 30 Houston summers. Would also like quality furnace that will not set the house on fire, but we use that about six weeks a year. Any experts on this? Thanks you, Rick

I think you are pushing the envelope looking for 30 yrs in our part of the world for sure. Any unit built with that quality was probably built that long ago and are dead or dying. Water source heat pumps seem to have an edge on longevity but may not be suitable for your application. I worked in this field before my fireservice career and part time during but I am far from an expert. The GE that came with my house got 22 years, the Rheem that replaced it got 20 and the Lennox is just over 6.

You do NOT want a heat pump in Houston believe me. Lennox for the condenser and a good gas fired furnace together with the coil for the evaporator unit. I did this back 30 years ago putting myself through law school and I don't believe the laws of physics have changed since then. ANd New Orleans is about the same as Houston climate wise.

Bryant uses a new refrigerant, with a trade name of "Puron", these are "400" series refrigerants, and the compressor runs at almost double the pressure or the older R-22 systems. They use the same style compressors and coils as the older systems also, so I don't see compressors lasting much more than the warranty. I had an Apartment complex of 140 units finished in 1974 and 75, when we sold it 6 years ago well over 2/3 of the A/C's were original. Those were Rheem, 1 1/2 ton (I think the model was AT-18). My dad had a 44 unit complex and My brother had about 20 twin singles (40 units) all with Rheem 2 1/2 ton heat pumps (RPCA-030) that I serviced from 1978. They survived well but renter abuse will kill any of them. After I sold my complex, I was in charge of maintenance for a 514 unit complex. About 300 of them had been equipped in about 1980 with Rheem heat pumps sized from 2 ton to 5 ton (RPCB-024 on up) They were around 26 to 28 years old and about 80-85% were original compressors. About 220 were York 2 1/2 ton Heat pumps that were newer and I had few problems with them, but these units were only about 12 years old. My brother had a big custom house built around 12 years ago, it has some monster Trane 5 Ton heat pump in it. It is Super complex so he has a service agreement on it. I know that every motor and compressor and most reversing valve have been replaced under warranty (the scum-bag heating contractor, put a used furnace/heat pump in a $1/4 million house) So I don't know if that is a fare representation. These units are all in the Central-Ohio area, normal A/C season is early June thru late September or mid October. Good Luck, Ivan

In this heat?.....I'm guessin they're still workin...:D

Buy an inline Aprilaire filter for whatever brand you buy. Keeps that A coil clean. I went thru this in southern Indiana 7-8 years ago and bought an Amana natural gas furnace and 3 ton ac. Got a programmable thermostat and this Aprilaire air cleaner. Well satisfied so far.

I had a Rheem 3 ton air handler ac installed in a s Florida cbs slab house and they installed electric heatstrips (seems like 10,000 btu) for the few times a year you need heat.

When you decide get at least three bids for comparable equipment. If they are more than $200 apart find out why. Do not get a bid from a company with less than 5 years time in your area. Go with the ones you are most comfortable having in your home.
