Bryant uses a new refrigerant, with a trade name of "Puron", these are "400" series refrigerants, and the compressor runs at almost double the pressure or the older R-22 systems. They use the same style compressors and coils as the older systems also, so I don't see compressors lasting much more than the warranty. I had an Apartment complex of 140 units finished in 1974 and 75, when we sold it 6 years ago well over 2/3 of the A/C's were original. Those were Rheem, 1 1/2 ton (I think the model was AT-18). My dad had a 44 unit complex and My brother had about 20 twin singles (40 units) all with Rheem 2 1/2 ton heat pumps (RPCA-030) that I serviced from 1978. They survived well but renter abuse will kill any of them. After I sold my complex, I was in charge of maintenance for a 514 unit complex. About 300 of them had been equipped in about 1980 with Rheem heat pumps sized from 2 ton to 5 ton (RPCB-024 on up) They were around 26 to 28 years old and about 80-85% were original compressors. About 220 were York 2 1/2 ton Heat pumps that were newer and I had few problems with them, but these units were only about 12 years old. My brother had a big custom house built around 12 years ago, it has some monster Trane 5 Ton heat pump in it. It is Super complex so he has a service agreement on it. I know that every motor and compressor and most reversing valve have been replaced under warranty (the scum-bag heating contractor, put a used furnace/heat pump in a $1/4 million house) So I don't know if that is a fare representation. These units are all in the Central-Ohio area, normal A/C season is early June thru late September or mid October. Good Luck, Ivan
