Hi all. I had one back in 1986-7 and traded it off like a fool. I would like to get another one. One made in that time frame.

Can someone give me a price range to expect to pay for one? I would like it to be in 95% condition or more. Thank you for any guidance.

We just had a post about the same thing. Your looking at around $700-$750 for a 95% with the wooden target grips. Take off about $50 if it has rubber grips. A -3 or -4 would be your best bet due to the endurance modifications and the -4 being drilled and tapped for a scope.Good luck with your search.

Never heard this before, are we confusing the L-frame .357 Magnum with the N-frame .44 Magnum? Endurance modifications?

There was a factory recall of the no-dash model that was taken care of by the dash-1. The recall is still honored and gets done quickly. It's not an endurance upgrade.

Yes; The 686-4 is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the Model 686 ( However they're all great); last year of forged hammer and trigger before going to MIM parts, newly designed rear sight, tapped and drilled for scope.::)

(Never heard this before, are we confusing the L-frame .357 Magnum with the N-frame .44 Magnum?) No, I don't think I'm confused. While the 686, 686-1, and -2 are fine they made some minor modifications in '88 to the yoke retention system, that would be the -3, the -4 in my opinion with the last year of the forged hammer and trigger along with the drilled and tapped frame, would be my first choice. The -5 has eliminated the cylinder stop stud and it was cast into the frame and has a frame mounted firing pin, then comes the -6 with the internal lock. So while the no dash ,-1, and -2 are fine and I would be glad to have them, the -3 and -4 would be my first choice.

To the OP, I am looking for a 686 4" also, I saw two or three very nice ones at a local gun show last week at that $700-$800 range in the -3/-4 variety. I like a fool passed on them, as I was looking for a long range rifle. I know the sellers and will be there bright and early at the next gun show in October, hoping they are still available.

My LGS had a new 686, 4" in the case the other day and I asked to see it, as I had never seen a 686 in their case before. Looked at the tag on it,,, $649.00 YIKES !! I said,,, "that's a pretty good price for that gun". They said that they pay almost that much for it but the box was broken and they just wanted rid of it. Of course I didn't buy it.

Around here the no dash and -1 sell for more. Maybe people are so used to wanting a 66 no dash or 1. I do not like the dash 4 686 due to not having flash chromed hammer and trigger. I have a -3 and a no dash cs-1.

There is someone local to me selling a -4 seven shooter, 4". If I didn't already have the same gun as a 6" I would be all over it. $850 I believe.

The only pre-lock, pre-MIM 686 Plus models are the -4s. I too prefer the flash chromed parts but you're limited to the boring ol' six shots.

I sold a 686-5 LE trade in at a gun show two weeks ago for $525. The following day picked up this 686-4 with box, paperwork and combat grips from a LGS! They had it listed for $725 but the owner likes me, I got it for $643 out the door. It isn't new but it is excellent+ in condition! We were both happy!
