I sold both the SW40VE and SW9VE this past weekend. I had a friend wanting a good pistol for his sister who had been threatened by her ex. He called and asked me if I had anything I trusted wholeheartedly and that was reasonably cheap. We took her to the farm and she shot both and decided the 9mm was the one she wanted. Then my buddy talked me out of the 40, he said it was nothing like he had heard and better than his current carry.

Those that went from the SW to the SD series, what made you swap or update?

So now I am looking for a SD series, do I want the older series or the latest VE series?

What if any differences between the original and the newest version makes one better than the other. I have read some posters specifically say they were looking for the original over the later version.

I want a 40 first then maybe a 9, later down the road.

I'd suggest the VE version. I lot of pistol for not a lot of money. Stop at a any local Academy in FW. I purchased one for $320.00 plus tax. Twenty bucks or so for an APEX trigger kit (if you are so inclined) and I am a happy camper. I feed it whatever I can find and it has never failed and has become a daily CCW. Perfect weapon? No. But, neither am I. Good luck.

The differences that you asked about between the original SD series versus the current SD/VE are minimal. The frame and frame components are identical. The original SD series has a melonite coated stainless slide and barrel with a Steel 3-dot rear sight and a Steel Front Night Sight. The SD/VE Series has an uncoated stainless slide and barrel, Plastic 3-dot rear sight (easily replaced with an M&P Steel for less than $20) and a Steel Front Dot Sight. I had a SW9VE and now have several SD9VE's . I do not miss my old SW9VE a bit. The SD's are far better guns. If you kept any of your SW mags they will work fine in the SD's. The only difference is the base plate.

In terms of trigger pull, IMO the current SD9VE is the best of the three (from SW to SD to SDVE.) Still heavy and long, but smooth...and mine is improving with use. It's not as heavy as the DA pull on many revolvers that I have felt, and I like the heavier pull on a HD gun with no thumb or grip safety. It's not designed to be a target gun.

I replaced the plastic guide rod assembly with a stainless steel one from Galloway, as well as the extended take down lever, and a M&P rear sight. Then I added a Pachmayr grip sleeve.

I haven't checked locally, but another member posted in past couple of days that his Academy Sports had SDVE's on sale for $289. I paid $299 for mine, and the usual price there is $319...which is still a heck of a bargain for this good, reliable pistol. I haven't seen a SD for sale for a while, but it mainly comes down to personal preference.

I am a very happy owner of an sd40ve, but this past weekend, I shot an M&P 40 Compact, and I will tell you what, that gun was so well balanced and sweet shootin, that the perceived recoil made it feel like a 22. The trigger pull, FANTASTIC, I believe it is set at 6.5 lbs from the factory. I love my sd40ve, and I will never get rid of it, but as soon as I can, I will buy two M&P 40s, one for me and one for my wife.

I have a Shield and 2 40c M&Ps. I love them, but i am not going to toss one of them under the seat of the 4 wheeler, the glove box of the truck or in the tackle box and leave it. I want this for a farm gun, keep one mag full of rat shot and the other full of FMJs.

I'll never get rid of my M&Ps.
