I am thinking about a getting a SUV

Except that the Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and certain Land Rover models don't have a separate chassis, but they are still very off-road capable.:)

True the Jeeps aren't body on frame - but they are a "uni-frame" rather than a "uni-body"

Generally speaking uni-bodies have separate front and rear sub-frame assemblies welded to the body with no other connection between them.

A uni-frame is basically a full-length box frame welded to the body.

Its kind of a subtle distinction, but the uni-frame is stronger and that contributes to overall rigidity which helps with off road capability.

The 1984 mid-sized Jeep Cherokee was the first vehicle with this type of design and it has since been copied by a lot of SUV makers.

All well and good, but they're still Jeeps! :D

Yessir, complete with all their quirks.
But even the lowly mid-size Cherokees are very off-road capable right from the factory, and are a great platform for building amazingly capable off-road vehicles. My boy Matt built a MONSTER Cherokee.
I'm a BIG fan of the Cherokees built from 1984-2001.
Apparently a lot of other people were too - the basic design was produced for 17 years - and they built and sold 8-10 million of them.

Most of the family drives:
Subaru Outbacks including the Wilderness model.
Mercedes SUVs as our nephew has been a GM for decades.
And Jeeps.

The Mrs and I drive the one in the picture.
Fueled with lasagna and beer.
Leans heavily on the SPORT side of SUVs. :D
