Had seen a a local gun store that is awash with collections being sold. On one level kinda sad. On the other hand man alive do they have some wild items. Lots and lots of revolvers. They had a Model 27-8 with beautiful walnut grips, deep dark bluing, a 5 inch half under lug barrel. A talllish gold bead front sight. It appears to be unfired! The cyclinder is cut for moon clips and hold 8. It is a Performance Center revolver. Only thing I don't like is it has a grooved trigger. Oh well. Excellent double action and the typical S&W single action trigger. The price was right. The original box was missing but the price was so good, I can't complain. As I understand it. less than 300 with the 5 inch barrel were made as a special order for Lew Horton in 1990. Slightly more were made in 4 inch and 3-1/2. If any one knows more please respond. I am willing to learn.

Don't know if it's from a run of 300 for Lew Horton or not, but I am confident it wasn't made in 1990; the lock didn't appear until 2001. 😊
Thanks, that was the only information I could find about a 27-8. So it is probably not one of those. Was hoping some of the forum members would know and post. Still very a nice revolver.

I don't get the moon clips on a 357.
I can't see that much of a speed advantage over a good speed loader.
It may be just me, but the factory grip gets in the way on every 629 I own. The moon clips eject all rounds at once in a positive manner. Hard ball 45 acp in a moon clip practically jumps into the cyclinder. Flat nosed 357 not as fast, if not aligned. For a demonstration, Jerry Miculek has some videos on YouTube. If a speed loader was faster he would use that instead of moon clips.

Nice score. My 27-8 is one of my favorites. It is from 2007. I got this letter back in 2014. Glad I did.
You might be confusing the run of guns made for Bangers and the guns made for Lew Horton. The 4 inch 8 shot Performance Center model 27 would probably be a 27-7. The 27-7 doesnt have the internal lock and the 27-8 does.
