I was at my LGS today. Jeff, the owner, wasn't there. His gunsmith, a really nice younger guy, was tending the counter, and I explained that I had come in to tell Jeff about the progress I've made on a Colt Cobra project gun I bought from him a few weeks ago. I saw the light click on, and he said, "Oh yeah, you're the revolver guy". I just said, "Yes, I am".

It made my day to be referred to that way!

I have been called many, much worse things in my life.

Yeah, one of the young guys at the gun counter of the local Pawn 1 refers to me that way everytime he sees me.
Must have something to do with me buying 5 revolvers there in the last 18 months or so.
Or maybe it's the fact that I want to look at almost every Smith they put out in the case...

How old is the Cobra and what are you doing with it?

It was made in 1965. I paid $135 OTD. It was missing a side plate and cylinder latch, plus a couple misc. screws and springs. Since these photos were taken, I've found almost everything I need for re-assembly.

I just don't know if I could work on a gun that had the side plate on the wrong side.

That is certainly a worthwhile project. 3" Cobras are very desirable and almost impossible to find. Since it's pre '66, it's a long butt that may be even harder to find. Yours appears to be in very nice shape and the original grips look pretty good. Colt internal fitting can be "challenging" so I hope you have most of the original parts. I'm envious, and good luck with your project. Please post pics when you're done.

I've been known as the revolver guy for a long time myself. I've been asked by many why I don't like autos and I tell them I do like 1911s and some others but have always just been most comfortable with a revolver as I started with them. I do have to admit that I'm thinking in this day and age I might be smart to go with a high cap auto but would likely still keep a J frame in my pocket as well.

Whenever I take a revolver to the range, I'm the only one there shooting one. In well over a year, I have never seen anyone shooting a revolver.

Everyone else shoots those black lookalike pistols. Yeah, I have one of those, too. Just one now, though. Got rid of the others.

Matter of fact, I can't recall anyone other than myself shooting a 1911, either.

Revolvers and 1911s...some folks just don't know what they're missing.

Same here, only one other wheelgunner at the gun club in the past year, with a NIB Match Champion.

The state range gets a few revolver guys. There was one day at the DNR range in Pickens, when another old-man wheelgun shooter pointed to my 686's on the bench, and said to my husband that he was "a man after my own heart". My husband pointed to his black lookalike Walther, and said that it was his, and the revolvers were mine. The guy's jaw dropped, and he walked away speechless. It's fun breaking stereotypes.

Against my better instincts, I almost bought a black lookalike, when I decided to get a bottom feeder for the range. But my husband rescued me, by finding me a SS CZ75B instead. :)

I liked shooting my cousins 1911 when he brought it over to shoot, but there was such a terrible struggle with the barrel bushing, during disassembly and reassembly, that I swore off anything with a bushing. :(
