I picked up a 454 super red hawk a couple months ago, was cool to have a bucking bronco, I grew bored after a month or so. Kind of funny since a full load of h110 terrified people at the range, it was the fireball, not me acting stupid or showing off. I have a 460, but it’s the 14”, so it’s not scary to me at all.

So, since 45 cal wasn’t enough, magnum research came to the rescue with a bfr 7.5” 500jrh with bisley grip. I loaded a few “medium” power unique 350gr plated rounds. I knew I was in for it when the gun twisted upwards. Wasn’t a violent snap, more of a push like black powder. These shot awesome and were not painful, just harder to handle than the same class of load in 454.

Well, out came the 350gr Xtp mags and jsps, and 2400,aa9. Hey, I need a hunting load as well as a plinker. Both loads are about 75% power. I shot one cylinder of 2400, I felt like Sammy Sosa hit my hand with a bat when he was at his peak. The gun twisted violently and threw my arms above my head easily. I keep my hands locked on the grip and have my elbows bent so the gun goes above my head, not right at my face. I still have the other rounds minus my five and two my dad shot. I believe I’ll stick with the wussier unique loads on this one, lol.

I’m 36 and don’t have enough sense to know I’m going to give myself arthritis if I don’t knock it off, lol. But, the big powder hogs are a blast, no pun intended.

So, where do you draw the line?

This isn’t meant to make fun of anyone because they can’t handle a howitzer, nipping that in the bud before it starts. We’re all different.

I got a 6-1/2" P&R M-29 for my Graduation present from college in 1982 and I liked shooting the gun and the recoil wasn't bad but the blast noise got a little annoying after a while. I liked shooting .41s and .44s with reduced power loads but eventually got rid of them and now I'm down to a 4" M28 and a 4" Security Six .357s and a 1911 .45acp as my most powerful handguns but I have four 9m/ms that I shoot the most just because the ammo is so much cheaper.

I put one cylinder down range, hornady FTX, in a 460. Fortunately, someone took a video, because you won’t see that again.
I am about done with 500 magnum also.
I am slowly figuring out these firearms will not wear out before my arms.

I owned a .454, and have shot numerous big bore cannons. BUT, long ago I settled on the .44 mag as my personal limit. I have taken moose, black bear, whitetail, wild boar, and a slew of lesser game with that cartridge out of handguns. A very flexible round, and you really do not need anything more powerful for game here in the lower 48.

I’ve had both a 4” Smith 500 and a 6 1/2 Freedom Arms 454 in my younger days.

The Smith lasted less than a year. Maybe should have bought an 8 3/8, but that ship has left port.

The FA, hunted with it a couple times in the Catskills, then for some 20 years sat in my safe, so bye it went.

My 5” full lug 629 Classic would be all I need nowadays.

I can’t imagine what I’d use these 454, 460, or 500 guns for.

They’re too big to be handy and won’t do anything in the field that can’t be done with a 44 or 45.

I don’t buy guns to impress folks at the range.

By your logic, why have a nice house when a cave will do, why have a nice car or truck when your feet will carry you? Why buy more expensive clothes when yard sales or dollar general will do? Why eat anything else besides peanut butter? Why bother with 22 when 357 can be loaded anemic to astronomical? It’s because we can, it’s fun for some folks and variety is the spice of life.

I used to have two .44 Redhawks - a 7" and a 5.5". I loaded 240gr hard cast Keith-style SWC's over 21gr of 2400, and shot them a lot. That was over 30 years ago. I quickly discovered Pachmayr grips, and that helped for a while. Then one day when I went to the outdoor range, I discovered my wrists complained the moment I picked them up. I sold them soon after (sorry I sold the 5.5").

Fast forward to 2017, and I bought the first .357 in years (I had an SP101, a Rossi, and a S&W 19, early model, all sold off during cash poor days). I bought my 60-15 (which I still have). Five rounds of Magtech 158gr JSP, and I said "Never again". I own one .357 "hand cannon" - a 4.25" GP100. It weighs 3.5+ pounds and sports huge soft Hogue grips. I occasionally shoot magnums in it. .460 or .500? Not for me.

I sitting here with a 2 5/8" 629-6 on the table beside me. I have used 240 gr Mag loads. I like full power 44 Special Loads!
