You may remember back during the holidays I made some wild, irrational, speculation about getting a smart phone. I've needed a new phone for over 10 years since my current one is about 14 or 15 years old I'm not sure just exactly how old it is. Miss Pam made the move yesterday and got her a new phone. When she called Sprint to have our service go back to just one line (mine) It only brought our bill down by 20 bux a month. And we were stuck in a plan that provided 500 minutes per month. 'course it included all the goodie; text, camera, internet and data etc which I don't want or need.

It was that proverbial straw that broke the camels back. There is a Cricket store right around the corner from my house and I've been hearing/looking at them for a while now. I went up there and got me a new phone. I did choke on the smart phone thing though. I'm just not ready. But I got a nice basic phone for 50 bux and I got lucky and caught a sale. UNLIMITED CALLS (AND TEXTS IF I WANT IT) ALL FOR ONLY 25 BUX A MONTH. I don't remember the exact amount but I think the regular price was about double that. And it's permanent. It never goes up. It's 25 a month for as long as I have the account. This will cut my cell phone bill back by 75%. I'm happy! :) Oh yeah, it does have a Camera too. Of all the options they put on phones these days that is the only one that I've ever even remotely been interested in having.

I also found out that Cricket was recently purchased by AT&T so I have confidence that the service will be good all over. I can make call right now but it may take 24 hours before an incoming call can get through. I I even got to keep the same number.

Now I gotta go read up on how to work the darn thing....

Way to go, WJ! At least you got a NEW phone. My Dad is still using an old flip phone that was actually my Mother's. He started using it when his croaked. He has talked about getting a smart phone for the last four or five years. He's looked at my old Iphone 4 & he's worried it might be to much for him. I try & tell him "you know me, & if I can work the dang thing you shouldn't have any problem!" I tell him he doesn't have to get the latest & greatest, but if he gets an Iphone I can help him with it. One of these days, I guess...

I hope you'll be patient with him. I understand where he's comin' from. I don't know how it is for your dad but for me it's like this; if I wanted the technology I'd jump all over it but the truth is that I really have no interest in it. Perhaps it will happen later. Stranger things have happened. ;)

Ive had cricket since late oh eight and the phone area coverage has always been good--some of their phones pieces of crapola but--the one I now have--everything on it that is supposed to work--actually works. My first phone--was a piece of garbage BUT--was the only phone out ofmy entire family--whose phone worked anywhere anytime and no dropouts.

However, that said--beware of some cricket employees.

Ive had some good trusted ones and have had a fair share of the ones who flat out lie to you or try to get more money out of you when getting another phone or service.

Case in point--since ATT and T bought them out--anyone with a cricket phone HAS to turn the other one in before March--because all other phones will not work. I January--I walked in to a local cricket coorporate office--and was wanting to get the new phone--and a new local phone number since ive been using the Houston one since I got the first phone.

OK,the manager of the place--a guy with thick beard--came over to me and I told him I needed a new phone due to company being sold. I was directed tothe only phone they had that I could get on the plan I wanted to stay on. Its a Cricket ZTE.Anyway,I asked how much will getting it--and a local number cost me? He said-the phone was one buck, the local number fee was fifty bucks and activation fee was another fifty bucks. I said nope and walked out. I went to to WM since a friend of mine told me about their go-phones and the monthly serice would be the same as cricket. My cost with simcard was around sixty bucks. I tried the phone--and everyone I called-said it sounded like I was talking through a small pipe. I took it back, got a slightly more expensive model--but it was one of those where you have toslide your fingers all over the screen to get it to do things. Well--with my tremors--that was impossible--though I did try it for a few days. I took it back--got my money back and was getting a bit irritated.

The next morning, I called the national Cricket number and asked the nice lady about my situation and told her what happened. She looked upthe type of phone and plan I had--toldme that my phone was supposed to be free-and that there wwas never supposed to be any activation fee--as I was already activated--and--there was also supposed to be a no fee to get my number changed. She told me the entire thing would cost me about sixteen bucks--because they had to charge taxes. That was much much better.

I gave her the exact addy for that cricket office and she told me--that the main cricket coorporate was watching them for violations due tomany many complaints and that if continued--the staff fired and store shut down.

I was told tomention when I went back i

My boy said to me the other day "How's that phone working for you, Pops?". It is an iPhone 4 he gave me when my treasured dumb phone proved to be beyond repair. I told him it was fine, meaning it was working fine, and still had more tech bells and whistles than I will ever learn in my lifetime.
"Well, just let me know and we'll get you something more up-to-date."
Now that I have been using the iphone for a couple of years, I like it. Navigation, games, email, music. It's addictive.
