I know the 686 is a great gun bc it's pretty much the same as mine but ss....

question is what about the new ones? I'd rather buy new bc I'm picky and would most likly redo a older gun even if it's in great shape if I bought it and have more in it than a new one..

is the new 686's just as good as say one made in 1985?

I don't like the rubber grip on them as good as the original s&w wood grip on my 586...but I figure I could swap it over to a old stlye wood grip if I look hard enough and find one thats not used.

your thoughts? I just really would like another 4" L frame .357.

main reason being my 586 is so nice I'm NOT going to be putting a lot of holster wear/time on it. I figured a ss gun will take the abuse from a holster better without showing much wear signs and keep my 586 lookin good

A brand new 686 is a fine firearm. While they are all round butts now, there are a number of grips that do a round to square butt conversion should that be what you like.

ok, thanks

also what is this LOCK everyone talks about on newer s&w's?

would my 1987 1988ish 586 have this?

I think you already have what you need in this category. Is one more cartridge that important to you?

The internal lock keyhole is on the left side of the frame, just above the cylinder release.
This is a result of S&W's deal with the
Klinton admin. in the '90s.

ok cool

just wondering is the 686 is thee same as my 586 besides the finish..if so I will buy a 686 4"

is there a certain dash number i should avoid incase I end up buying an older one?

my 586 is a dash 2 had no clue about the dash or what to look for when I bought it but I THINK a dash 2 is a decent gun mod wise.

i have no clue what you mean is one more cartridge that important to me? bc i plan on getting just a regular ole 686 that holds 6 bullets NOT the 7 shooter..is what want ur talkign about?

Here's my 686-2. AFAIK, the only difference is the metal they are made of. I had a 586, sorry I sold it to be honest.

Any older dash pistol is good, so get whatever you find that's in good shape and priced right.

Like yourself, I prefer six-shooters.

nice piece!

I've decided to go with a 686 4" but instead of buying a new one I think I'm going with an older gun like I did with my 586..

it may come down to searching on gun broker i dunno...

I decided on the older gun because I didn't know this until now but the new ones are round butt..i perfer the square. I also perfer the original wood grips of the older ones.

thanks!

I have a 686 plus 7 shot with no lock 6" barrel with a Leopold scope. This is the ultimate gun!Square butt with wood grips and she is sweet. This is the best hunting rig I have ever carried. When we hunt Bear I carry a Super Redhawk .44 Mag with 2 power scope. Just feel better, Bear=44 Mag!!!!
