I just got a HP Office Jet Pro 8600. I run it wireless and it was really easy to set up. The old HP was a pain to set up but they have improved so much. Also the ink is a little cheaper. So far I really like it. Don

i just love these types of threads...
everyone has a favorite...
mine for as long as i have been on a computer has been an Epson...
this time (last 3 years) has been an Artisan 730
only thing i do is change the ink cartridges with ones from a discount refill store and have had zero problems...

your results will without dought differ...;)

You don't need much of a printer these days to do a lot. When I got my iMac they tossed in a cheap HP F4480 that sold for less than $100. It scans, copies and all the rest. I hooked it up to my Airport Extreme so it's wireless for any computer in the house. Close to two years no problems. I think one of the most important things is to check the price of replacement ink cartridges. My previous printer was a DELL and it cost a fortune for ink.

I've had HP (they're "OK"), Cannon and Epson. My Cannon drank ink like a sailor in a bar after 6 months at sea.

The Epson, an Artisan 800, has been very good overall and does not require replacement ink on what seems to be way too often.

My current printer is an HP 1320NW. After many years of trying to go cheap and buying USB and inkjet printers, I got fed up with them not working and got a real printer.

USB printers require drivers that might not get updated, leaving you with a boat anchor when you upgrade your OS.

Inkjet cartridges always seem to be dried out when I need to print something.

I would get a networked (wireless is really nice) Postscript laser printer.
On my mac anyway it works perfectly with the generic Postscript driver built into the OS. No more being held hostage to the printer manufacturer who decides not to update the driver.

The toner cartridge lasts forever (at least 7 years now) and doesn't dry out.

That's odd. I have never had a printer quit with me. As a matter of fact, I have a closet full of obselete printers that work just fine, when I retired them because a newer computer would not work with them. I still have a 24-pin printer that runs on the perforated paper that's indestructible.

I'm a fan of B/W Laser printers. I've got a 2420HP that I use rarely. It sits there gathering dust for a couple months then it works fine when I need it. I used to fix printers as part of my job for a living. Inkjet printers are money pits, unless you need a color printer on a daily basis. Prices on new Laser printers are relatively cheap. But they will include what they call a "starter" toner cartridge. Research what a new toner costs before you buy. STAY AWAY FROM LEXMARK ANYTHING.

I have a Brother HL2040 black/white laser printer that I use for pretty much anything not requiring color, it's about 7-8 years old and all I've ever done is change the toner cartridge about every 2000 pages or so.

For color printing I have a Canon MP280 that I ordered through Walmart.com and had shipped to the store, it's a printer/scanner/copier and has been working great for the past 4 months since I bought it. It replaced the TWO HP junk printers I had before it that made it just out of warranty before they wouldn't pick up the paper, randomly gave me an "out of paper" alarm and just generally didn't work worth squat. The Canon ink cartridges don't break my wallet either. I had a Canon before the two HP's and should have just stuck with them, that one lasted about 7 years before it just stopped working entirely.

I also have Windows XP with NO plans to upgrade to any of the downgraded "new" OS's that Microsoft is trying to foist off on us. Wife's comp has Windows 7 on it and they can keep that junk.

As others have said, if you want a good ink-jet printer that uses reasonably priced ink, the only real choice is Canon.

I have Canon and Brother all in ones on my network, an HP I use for utility printing and an Epson photo printer. I can't complain about any of them. I use the Canon the most as it's the cheapest on ink. I've had 3 Lexmarks and none of them lasted past the second ink change.

Make sure that the printer you are looking at is compatible with your operating system. The newer stuff sometime isn't backward compatible very far.

I second this. I have a Samsung SCX 4623 and picked it up for $99.
One thing that was posted was not to update the driver as that would "lock" you into their brand of cartridge only. I have been very happy with the unit. YMMV

I've had a Cannon that I bought at Wall Mart 2 years ago, it does everything and has reasonable ink cost. It was 40 bucks, and it has been great. If your old printer was 5 years old-it's a new ball game anyway. % years is a long time in computer stuff. We bought a new HP for the other PC the other day-an HP, 38 or 39 dollars. So far so good.
