Hi guys... I traded into a Smith 617-1 that had its front sight MILLED OFF

anyhow I knew it going into the deal and I like the gun and the value was adjusted etc so please don't think the other guy tried to get away with anything!

Well anyhow I get home yesterday and was lookin it over and the sight is gone along with the ramp it sits on. On top of that the milling was a touch "off" and is canted.

I was thinking of a rebarrel sice it has this lovely feature and was drilled and tapped in two spots in the barrell for a rib sight. I am thinking now of just redoing the front sight.

I would like ideas/suggestions on how to do it or have it done. I am thinking I can mill a slot wide enough for a new ramp and either drill n tap it or pin it in place. Id there a premade ramp I can aquire? I don't need it to be sainless- black or blue would be fine.

Also I can buy a barrel reasonably and was wondering if that is something a reasonably skilled fabricator can do? How much would a pro charge to swap a barrel out?

I may buy a 4 inch barrel to have as a spare and "play" with this one... I wanted this to be a "beater" as opposed to my really nice 17... stainless is better to me for a field gun if I have a choice although some of my blud ones get used too

oh and no the moonclip does not feed the 617-it feeds the 625 from the trade- it was the main dish- the .22 was the adjuster

well it seems that SDM is only about 45 minutes from my place... it might end up there before its over with. I got this as a project so maybe I will shoot it and see if the barrel is worth saving first

looks like its a 100 dollar fix...

now maybe I can find a used rear sight for it...

By the holes in it, I would say it had a BoMar rib on it. I would a rib sight and have it cut to take your red-dot.

Jodi- the first link had that sight base installed... I believe I am gonna have that done eventually whether I do it or have it done.
for the money I will likely look into having SDM do it- they are close enough and if the web site price is right its cheap enough to have them do it.

Bullseye smith - it did have a rib and I got it in the trade. It was not a bo-mar I thought about putting it on again but I doubt using the rib and the dot sight would be good with all the weight. If I was gonna shoot it as a bullseye gun or an action game where a scope would be good I can always put the rib or scope back on.

If I cut the barrel for that sight I believe it just screws on.

I will see how the barrel shoots and if its a good barrel I will get a sight on it... if not I'll likely get a 4 inch for it. I can always use the weaver base and scope without drilling the new barrel.

I have plenty of auto's that have scope setups for busseye etc.
