I recently bought a smith and wesson m&p 15 sport 2. I've also ordered a magpul MOE rifle length drop in handguard. What modifications do I have to do to the gas tube in order for this to work. I know I'll have to move the iron sight to the length where the new handguard will drop in. Do I have to get a new low profile receiver for the gas tube? Because right now its tieing into the front iron sight. Will this work? What can I do? Is it possible or should I just take it back and stick with the carbine length, wich I didn't want... thanks in advance if you can help me.

Why not just buy a carbine length that drops right in?

What your trying to do won't work. If you have a A2 style front sight it's also the gas block and can't be moved forward to accommodate the longer handguard.

What if I buy a new low profile gas block? I'm still going to use the A2 sight I'm just gonna move it forward to catch the drop in handgaurd

I am trying to do the same, I found VISM AR15 M-LOK Carbine Handguard VMARMLCE Gun Make: AR on optics planet. It will fit if you have the raised front post.

Mine is the flat front that is a small rail. Do I have another choice for the hand guard since I dont have the front post?

Thanks for asking this, I have been looking for the same question, I am sure we are not the first

The pins that hold the A2 sight in place are slotted into the barrel so that won't work.
If your going to put a low profile gas block on it why don't you just go with a longer free float handguard that would be the easiest.

The style of gas block you have still has to have the Delta ring type barrel nut and the block can't be move forward. Your options would also be to install a free float handguard and you can go with whatever length you wish.

Absolutely....just get a magul handguard for carbine gas system. If you wanted a middy or rifle length gas system, you bought the wrong AR.

I googled VISM Extended Length AR Handguard - Review and videos come up. Im going to give it a try

Jmoreno what is your goal here?

Do you want to just change out your hand guard or do you want a longer hand guard?

If you just want to swap out the hand guard buy the MOE carbine length or MOE SL carbine length.

If your goal is to have a longer hand guard, your best bet would be to install a low profile gas block and free float the barrel using a longer rail.

Thanks a lot guys. I am happy with the Sport II. Just wanted the longer handrail. There should be a post on this that is posted permanently on the top because I am sure this question is asked all the time

I wanted a freefloated longer handguard too. I ground down the front sight so it became a low profile gas block. Then dremeled off the delta ring then installed a Fortis Rev II handguard that attaches to the standard barrel nut. I didn't have to remove either the front sight or the barrel nut. worked perfectly.

If you just want a longer hand guard you could go with the Magpul MOE SL.

The MOE SL fits the carbine length but extends underneath the front sight about two inches. Thus giving you a longer drop in hand guard.
