OK I'm looking for a scope for my sport. I need a 4 inch eye relief and good to 500 yards. The only other thing is I would like the scope to be tacticle length and not a full size. Here are two I'm specifically looking at.
UTG Amazon.com: UTG 3-9x32 Compact CQB Bug Buster AO RGB Scope with Med. Picatinny Rings, 2" Sunshade: Sports & Outdoors
And the barska Amazon.com: BARSKA 3-9x42 IR Contour Riflescope (4A Mil-Plex IR 7/8" Picatinny Base): Sports & Outdoors
Anyone have either of these or others they would recommend?

If your gonna buy optics, buy good, brand name optics. You spend 6-800 dollars on a rifle and then put a 50 dollar optic on it. I'm partial to Leupold such as:

Mark AR 4-12x40mm Riflescope

Long range shooting solutions for the tactical hunter have never been easier. Is the target at 500 yards? Simply turn the dial to the “5” and squeeze the trigger. It’s that easy. Whether you shoot an AR15 platform or a bolt action, the Leupold Mark® AR™ 4-12x40mm has it covered.

Not cheap but you'll be passing it on to your kids!

OK either of those scope will work on human sized targets to 500 yards, but I find that the size of target they will allow you to focus on is limited. You wont find extreme distance shooters going with that small of a scope it just limits your ability. At 500 yards your crosshairs will cover quite a bit of your target. those scopes are great for tactical shooting i.e. human sized targets under 300 yards but will not let you take precision shots out at 225+yards (between body armor sections). You will need a larger scope for that. This is where you have to decide what you want the rifle to do.
I hope this helps:D

The Leupold is a good scope, for the hunting I do it still doesnt have the magnification. I believe in buying a good scope also but I will spend $200 I wont spend $400 scope on a $600 rifle. I will use mine I may drop it I may have it slide off the hood of my truck. Presently I am running a 6-24x50 bushnell banner. The dawn to dusk version. the optics are bright and clear and it works very well plus can be had for under $200. I am shooting sub moa at 200 yards with my longest kill at 262 and it was a prairie dog, really small target one shot one kill. Like I said it is what you want out of a rifle, No disrespect to Kodiakco.
But I can do everything with my scope that he can with the Leupold for less than half the money, in fact the difference is 1000 rounds of ammo. And I dont put $50 scopes on my rifles generally either. :D

that will make you a nice scope, it really will and you wont have to go through the things I did to make this one work.128.jpg:D

That is a good scope. I was gonna ask what you intend to do with the setup, i.e. hunt or shoot paper. I have that same scope on a .270 but I have never attempted to shoot a deer (or paper or anything else) at 500yds with it. My poor ole eyes need higher magnification at distances like that. Anything living that I could be sure of killing and not wounding with a .223 past 100-150yds max is gonna be pretty small.

Storyteller; I have came to the same conclusions with my hunting rifles and have been pulling of the 3-9's off and going with a minimum of 4-16. The Stones used to have a good line about getting older.

Dont most wives....my wife goes nuts with the 10-22....but then she cleans up her brass LOL

Good choice. I have the P223 3-9x which is essentially the same scope but calibrated for 223. Check out Nikon's spot on software! It's free on the web and they have an app for your smartphone for $5. Your scope has the BDC which works with this software. I'm glad you decided on a quality scope. I was going to warn you to stay the heck away from Barska. Nothing but problems with the scopes I've had from them.

My Nikon M-223 2-8x will be riding on my 15-22. I discovered that with my eyesight 8x is not enough magnification at 100 yards. I picked up a Simmons 44mag 6-21x44 to use on the Sport. Its side focus adjustment doesn't make for the clearest image at 21x, but it's serving its purpose for me.

No offense taken! I don't know about your scope, the Leupold has a lifetime warranty also. Not to you, but in general some shooters have a bad habit of buying expensive firearms and then cheaping out on optics. When I had my R700, I topped it with a Leupold VX-II model. It cost half as much as the rifle. It was worth it.
