I took my 16 year old daughter to the range for her first time shooting today. My 13 and 15 year old daughters have shot quite a bit, but until now the 16 year old(AKA "The Princess") has shown little interest in shooting. I spent an hour with her before we went, going over gun safety, operation of different guns and types of actions. Then it was off to the range and I got her started with the Ruger Mark II. Her very first shot at 15 Ft. was a near center bullseye! She mainly shot the .22, but did put a cylinder through the Chiefs Special. For such a novice shooter, I was impressed with her safety awareness and weapon control. Here she is at the firing line and her first target.

Kudos to both of you, and especially to you for two reasons: Getting your daughter involved, and for documenting the event with photos.

As the years pass, the photographs will mean more and more to the both of you.

Also, congrats to your daughter for some good shootin'!

Excellent teacher you... I took Caitlyn out a little over a year ago-she did the same...great natural. I THINK I might have a photo or two of her handy work?? Caitlyn did hers with my Walther P-38.

Faith loved shooting the Mark II, but(understandably)was a little recoil sensitive with the Chiefs Special. She did hang in there for all five shots, though. Unfortunately I don't have anything between those two in terms of recoil. I've never shot a P-38, but it's got to be a bit snappy too. How did Caitlyn handle the recoil?

What caliber was the one she fired? Caitlyn firing my Walther-had zero issues. It was the first time ever even holding a gun for her. Its a 9mm. It pulls up a tad-but not enough to frighten even the most skittish. I cant recall if I had even started Caitlyn off with one of my .22 Rough Riders or not? I THINK I did-just to get her used to holding a gun, shooting, reloading, the noise etx, but cant remember? I know she went through 200 or so rounds of 9mm in practice-for her shooting test two weeks later. I made sure she had only an excellent brand of ammo-like Aquila, or Winchester and Browning to test with-not Remington in this case.

P-38s are fun as heck, ive loved them since day one. Got my first back about 93? and was a certified Stalingrad battlefield pickup and sold to a US dealer (Sarco) in this case. I think I paid roughly $300 for it-probably way too much for it at the time.

It's a Ruger Mark II .22 cal government model with 5 inch bull barrel. Almost no recoil whatsoever. Shoots like a pellet pistol.

I saw one of those for sale and always kinda dug those. They remind me somewhat of Japaneese Nambus of even more distant to Lugers. Yes, my imagination runs wild too. :D

You did good dad! All my kids starting shooting very young also and still do today. Surprising enough none of them have ever been in any trouble, go figure. Hang on to that picture, you'll enjoy it many years from now.

If I remember correctly the original Ruger Mk I was patterned from an exterior aspect, on the Luger. Certainly if I put my 1918 P08 alongside my Mk Is and Mk IIs, the grip /frame angle is almost the same. The Mk III/45 altered the angle to match a 1911. Dave_n

I'm concerned about her left thumb. That grip might hurt her on some other gun.
