I really, really want one. And I can only get one. I do have several S&W's and now fixated (you know the feeling) on a 27. But an earlier one or a newer one? I'll occasionally shoot it but not a lot. Hell, I'll barely be able to pick it up at my age. So if you can only have one beautiful S&W Model 27, which one fellas? Thank you - Cadiz

I have had two Model 27's, a 5-inch and my 3 1/2 inch. I would love to get another 5-inch gun because of the balance, but I found that I like the 3 1/2 inch barrel so much better because I can conceal it in cold weather and it packs well on my hip. Both were 27-2's. They are still affordable, and you can shoot them all day long without having to worry about the value. I of course would shoot a Registered Magnum or pre-27 because that's what they were built for.

It's hard to argue with this gun though.

Another vote for an early 3.5" It will shoot as accurate and as far as is reasonably needed and is still durn right handy to trundle around.

Though not a fan of recessed chambers, I'd look for a pre-Bangor Punta. Not sure what revisions that includes.

Another vote for the 3.5. The older ones are nice, but I've never seen anything wrong with a -2.

I wouldn't think about carrying it. That's why I've got a 12-2. I just think it looks like a million bucks, and shoots just fine at any distance I'm going to shoot it at.

My next choice would be a 5".

I like th 27-2 in 5 inch barrel for balance but it's hard to beat the 3.5 inch for looks and carry.

Definitely a dash 2 or earlier. I you are serious about not picking it up, i.e. mostly just to look at, then I would strongly recommend a 5-screw (what is now called a "pre-27"). If you will be shooting it I think a dash 2 would do fine but I personally still prefer the 5-screw models.

As to barrel length, I was strongly influenced in my younger days by the writings of Skelton so I think the 5" is the all time classic N-frame 357 Magnum. Second choice, but what most every one else favors, would be the 3.5". Leave the 4" barrel to the blue collar, working class Highway Patrolman. (smile)

Was there a state police m28 model or a combat masterpiece model in 357mag??

I would like to get a 357 combat masterpiece if there is one to go with my k38 combat masterpiece. The K38 is so smooth.

.357 version closest to the Combat Masterpiece .38 is the Combat Magnum or Model 19. They are both K frames.

The Model 28 is a plain jane N frame the same as the Model 27

If you have several S&Ws then I doubt youd be carrying the M27

In which case I'd opt for a 4 inch. You can pick up a nice 27-3 for a lot less $ than a 27-2 3 1/2 inch and be just as happy with it. Most ofthe earlier -3s have the deep dark blue most folks lust after. Have FUN !....dan

I found a 627-0 locally for $900. Its 1986 in stainless and there wasn't that many manufactured so my LGS says.

I find it somewhat hard to find a S&W used in 357mag most of the guys who own them won't part with them locally.
