A guy I know has a "Walther 9mm". He mentioned it to me in a restaurant last week; didn't have the gun with him.

He is not a gun person (see the topic here on people who don't know what gun they have) and all that he could tell me is that it had three interchangeable frame backstraps to fit the particular owner's hand.

Does this sound like a P-99? I told him to go home and read the lettering on the slide, but it left me curious...I'm not too up on the latest Walther guns.

Yes, the Walther P-99 was one of the first pistols offered with interchangable back straps. It was made in 9mm & .40 cal. Of course S&W joined the party with their variant the SW-99's. It's a 99% sure bet your friend has a Walther P-99. They are nice guns, but are different in feel to almost any other synthetic framed high-cap auto I have come across. They really are their own thing. Still very nice & a bit under-rated if you ask me.
