Identify this M&P

It's a standard square butt 2" .38 M & P. JP@AK is the local expert on these but it probably dates to late 1949 - early 1950. Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice little snub nosed revolver. I carried one for a bit when in plain clothes.

Someone else will be able to provide a year. I am not near my books.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I've got one in the same serial range. Haven't lettered it, but I'm satisfied with Alan's estimate of 1949-'50. Those stocks, while great for that gun for carrying, are somewhat newer than the gun itself. The standard stocks at that time were like the numbered set on my gun.

Shipping year? SN C1275xx
C127431, also a 2" square butt unit, shipped in September, 1950. So that's pretty close.

I will point out that the stocks on yours probably do not number to the gun. The tapered shoulder Magna stocks didn't show up until 1953.

You have a nice little M&P there, wrong stocks notwithstanding.

Edit: I just noticed your stocks also have the rounded bottom - hence, PC Magna stocks. They also were not available in 1950. I could be off by a year, but if I recall correctly, those were introduced in 1954.

The picture of #4 shows the correct sharp shoulder Magna grip style for that time period. Some might refer unofficially to your snubby as a pre-Model 10 as it has the short action. But Model numbering did not begin until about 1957-58.

Thanks guys! I was "guessing" a 1948 date, '49 or '50 will be fine.
I have a '63 m10-5, I don't care for the "pre model 10" moniker, as the Military & Police is different enough to be called what it is. Too bad if they are non-original stocks, if I decide to shoot it much it will wear a Hogue Bantam anyway.

"Modified Magnas" and the ramp sight are offered in the 1952 'Centennial' catalog.

I don't use it myself, and it would have been impossible for S&W to use "pre-Model 10" either. But it is a realty that the term is used by some as a means to identify those short action M&Ps made during the approximate time period between 1948 and 1958.

Thanks, Lee. I knew it was later than 1950, but could not remember exactly. I'll make a note.

And yes, the factory name was "Modified Magna." They are commonly referred to as PC, for "Plain Clothes." Sorry to be so imprecise. :o
