IDPA Holster for S&W Performance Center 627 8 Shot 357 Magnum

I am considering using this for IDPA.

My friend said that there is an issue with the Speed Beez OWB Holster for the S&W Performance Center 627 8 Shot 357 Magnum.

I can’t find any decent holster if this is not satisfactory.

Please advise.

Very nice gun. Not many shoot an 8 shot in IDPA because you are only allowed to shoot 6 before a reload. If you have rounds left over, you have to put the moonclip or magazine in a pocket or get a penalty for dropping live ammo on the ground. It's easier to just use a 6 shooter under those rules. Therefore, not many holsters for that gun.

I'm shooting a 686 that I converted to a 646 in a Galco #L159HOD-FL104B That also fits a 625. That means it will fit a 627 as well.

As PD pointed out, better to use a 6-shot revolver. However, his inference that you can load 8 rounds, doing a reload with retention after 6 are fired is incorrect. Rule 8.2.6.4 limits revolvers to 6 rounds loaded - meaning your moon clip or speed loader can only contain 6 rounds, which makes reloading a PITA. The clip or loader is off-balance and you have to index the cylinder on closing.

I'm assuming that you already own the gun and are just interested in trying revolver division in IDPA - for that purpose it's fine, given the limitations noted. If you find you like revolver IDPA, then purchasing a more suitable gun would be in order.

Again, for just testing the waters, any 4" N-frame holster, that is not boned for a fluted cylinder, and meets IDPA criteria should work fine - no rule about the barrel reaching the bottom of the holster, LOL,

Oh ok. I did not realize that there was a 6 round limit on a revolver for IDPA. Well, darn. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

I only have a Ruger GP 100 Match Champion 10 mm 6 shot , S&W Performance Center 586 L-Comp 7 Shot 357 Magnum, S&W Performance Center 627 5” 8 Shot 357 Magnum , S&W Performance Center 627 8 Shot 357 Magnum , and a S&W 640 357 Magnum 5 Shot. So I have above and below the limits for 357 Magnum. I haven’t even shot the 10 mm so I don’t know how I like it.

I did not know about the barrel length and the round limit. That would be a hassle.

The only ones that would work are a S&W 686 or a Ruger GP100, then.

These are my revolvers though I need to update, since 3 left and 4 or 5 came into their places.

I missed the 686 listed in Post #4 - if it is a 6-shot 4" barrel that would work. As would the Ruger 10 mm MC - which is what I am currently shooting for IDPA.

You could shoot the 686 (assuming it is configured as noted above) in the SSR subdivision using speed loaders (recommend Safrailand Comp III's) and .38 Spl rounds - Power factor for that is only 105 (mouse fart loads).

The Ruger would use moon clips and thus shoot in the ESR subdivision. One of the main reasons I bought the Ruger is that in the past I had used a Smith 646 for IDPA and the moon clips for that gun also work with the Ruger. They can be had rather cheaply directly from Ranch Products. You use .40 S&W - not 10 mm - and the power factor for that is 155. Speed Beez makes a holster for Ruger (actually a Speed Beez branded Comp Tac). And North Mountain makes a stacked moon clip holder - buy two.

The springs have been changed in my Ruger. Tried the combo that everybody said was a sure thing and still got some light strikes, so went a little higher - forget what springs I have in there now. Other mods to my gun are a Bowen Rough Country rear sight, chamfered charge holes and Hogue Tamer grips (these are like the grips Smith uses on the X-frames). I've been using factory ammo - Federal Syntech 205 grain.

The 686 would be a good choice for IDPA.
