I know this is going to fall on many deaf ears, but then again I do come from a long line of hard headed hillbilly’s
Back in 1780 the English major Patrick Ferguson tried to dissuade the pioneers from the western side of the Appalachians in what is now eastern TN/KY, from entering the battle for independence. With a veiled threat of severe retaliation toward those pioneers if they failed to heed his warning and enter into the fight for freedom.
This proclamation led to a force of these strong independent people who bowed to know one, except God. Deciding to take the issue to hand.
So under the command of Sevier, leaving what is now north west Tennessee they traveled east over the mountains to give the famous major his chance.
This happened at the hill that is call Kings Mountain on the North/South Carolina border.
Robert Young, was one of those who traveled in that group, and who has been credited with helping Major Ferguson keep his word, after the major reportedly stated "that God Himself could not get him off this Mountain" where he still lies today!
Old Bob Young did this with a flintlock rifle, he called sweetlips. that old boy was my maternal great grandfathers (Robert (bob) Young’s) great grandfather, and the name is still held in high esteem and is popular in the young family bloodline.
While I don’t have the original sweetlips, I do own comparable guns, as well as guns that are comparable to what the military uses today. And I am proud of that independent bloodline that still flows through my veins.
I own the same type of guns that were used by that disturbed young man, that morning in the Newtown elementary school.
They are still right where they were that morning, they have not moved.
I sincerely wish that the educators that day could have gotten their hands upon one of my guns, before they were forced to confront the evil in that boys heart unarmed.
While there is a debate going on against the Assault rifles of today, Please remember.
In that 1780 battle mentioned above, it was the long rifle, a slower shooting more accurate variant of the military gun of the time that was used by a civilian. One of those who decided that freedom was worth fighting for, that helped win the battle, that changed the tide of that war, and secured the freedoms that this country was founded upon.
Our country has filled up with many people from different lands that have no shed blood in this game we call the United States; they have come here, after it was secure from the threats that faced those original pioneers opening up this land to settlement.
From lands where only the elite where allowed guns, or hunting privileges, or where the guns where in the hands of the tyrants that preyed on their defenseless disarmed population.
They fail to realize that in America, it is the individual’s responsibility, and not just their right to defend their persons and property from those who would gladly deprive them from that same life and liberty, with deadly force if required
They fail to realize that people are just as violent and greedy today as ever in the history of mankind, and it is only only the knowledge that there could be serious repercussions, From trying to force their will upon those in this country who they consider to be weaker or less worthy of life and liberty.
It’s that uncertainty that keeps these types of individuals from succeeding in taking over our nation and depriving its people of the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.
Weakness, vulnerability fear and escape, is all that is in the heart of any individual or people who find themselves in the presence of a greater force that is determined to carry out violence against them, when there is no means to defend themselves or retaliate against those who seek to destroy them
But give those same people or person, an opportunity to defend themselves and you give them the oppurtunity to turn that weakness into strength, vulnerability becomes protection, fear becomes hope, and escape becomes defiance.
think back through our history when did the weak ever win against those with superior power and tecnology.
I will not be at the big assemblies of people who gather to show their support of the 2nd amendment, "and I do", because I don’t like crowds of any type, and they always have someone at their front that seem to have higher ambitions.
But rest assured that I will honor that family bloodline that so long ago quietly defied the proclamation, and be one of the first who will cross over the mountains to do battle with those who would try to take my freedom away!
