If You HAVE To Shoot A Bear, Where Would You Aim?

When I lived Alaska my brother in law came in from the Midwest to Brown bear hunt. After giving him an appropriate rifle, he shot a few targets and felt confident. A buddy that was very experienced then took a soccer ball and threw it hard at him and told him to hit the ball as it bounced towards him. My Brother in law was immediately sobered by reality.

I have more Blackbears at home then at my camp in the green mountains.
1973 October
Very first bear hunting trip to vt, got so close the apple puke was smoking in the orchard was smoking. EST bear size was a cub. I was ten feet from it in the tall grass with a 30-06.
1974 October
Entering the forest to go to our stands at 4:30am a black bear was on our left while a bobcat was on our right going up the mountain. We left at 9am and the bear heckled us all the way out. On this trip a writer for field n stream was with us, I never seen Jack again.

I had a 400# bear in my backyard in ct. he left and in two years a cub showed up.
At home onenight this cub was only feet from me at dusk. I raised my arms and screamed to run him off.
This cub constantly shows up to raid my fruit trees.

A while back now my Buddy Milt (RIP) won a drawing - a Black Bear Hunt up on the Jicarilla Reservation.
Dogs, Horses, two professional Guides.
I offered him one of my 44s But he wanted to use his Colt 357.
With Silvertip Bullets.
Those Hounds got on a good one and treed it pretty quick.
Milt cut loose and started shooting.
And shooting.
It took several hits to take that bear.
Those Silvertips didn’t penetrate.
It was a beautiful Cinnamon Red Bear.
And the only Bear Meat I ever ate.
