Quite a few S&W revolver entries in this year's match.

Congratulations to R Fussell for winning .22 Revolver class outright with his trusty old 8 3/8" 617. This was against the superb Freedom Arms revolvers! So doubly good. Sadly, no photo.

Our own Kdiver58 was Field Pistol Chicken King (not an actual prize, but impressive against International Class TC shooters and the like. Done with a 586, he got 13 of 15 1/2 scale birds!

I managed to smack the most Rams in Field Pistol Any Sight, but only on a re-entry, just to improve morale after sub-par runs previous with all standing entries.

More in a bit!

Good form and looking like the new loads are good too. Only one chicken left.

.44 Mags on the line.

Going all Jeff Cooper on the critters! 75Vette's coming along nicely. Excellent windage control, and usually good elevation. Just need to identify the cause of the odd low hits at distance and scores will be running up quickly.

And thanks to SW282 for being so patient with me. Done left him hanging for a month over a nice swag of W-W .44 Mag brass. I didn't get a good look, but it looked like he had several .44s to try. He just won't turn in score cards! Happy to see him and friend out for the shoot, regardless.

Keepin score is work..l'm here to have FUN...
Besides l can't even count 44 CASES. Much less targets..
Just ask the Author of this thread :-(

What a perfect day for shootin' steel. Congrats Kdiver on taking 1st in class. And jaymoore, thanks for the spotting/coaching. I think my low hits were because of the nut behind the wheel! :D
I think I'll fill out sw282's card for him next month and get his name on the board.

I deprimed the fired ones and checked fit in the 29-3 but haven't counted them yet. May buy some more ammo boxes today, which will facilitate inventory control.

I also note that the New Old Stock W-W Super cases are a good 0.010" longer than new production Winchester cases. So boxes will help keep 'em separate.

Any more photos, y'all?

Just of top of my head there were at least:

1: 17-4 (shot as Standing entry)
1: 617 no dash (Which, BTW, was the first revolver to shoot a perfect 80x80 in .22 Revolver class at the World Championship match some years back. I mean this exact particular revolver!)
1: 586
1 (or more): 686
1: 57-1
1: 29-3 (10 5/8" bbl.)
and
A giant pile of 629s!

Any other models fielded of which you are aware? I think John W. used at least one 629, but not sure what else.

Some pirated SW282 photos, I think:

No idea why .44s seem to be most popular, except that they are common, accurate, and available in lots of nifty configurations. If Kdiver58's .357 continues to shine, I could be well tempted to go that direction myself, again. (Medium velocity cast bullet loads have been a travesty so far past the 50yd line! He's now throwing plated projectiles, so that might be an easy option.)

Back in the '80s when I was shootin steel,

Started out with the 44 in an 8 3/8 Model 29-2 and cast Keith SWCs over a dollup of 2400.

Later went to the Sierra 220 gr. Match bullet over more 2400.

It would topple even the hardest set Rams.

I sometimes kinda miss IHMSA........

.

Those 220gr Sierras are deadly on most anything they hit..Federal loaded this bullet once in factory 44mag ammo...l know of a couple Maine Black Bear hunters that swear by them...Not a true FMJ bullet with their exposed lead nose make them great for hunting where deep penetration is important

Correction, John and Gary W. were using .357s, of which at least one was a 686, as I saw stainless and full underlug and assumed he was still running one of his 629s. My bad.

Adds a Model to the list above, though.
