Just got notice today from MidSouth Shooters that IMR is going to be adding another rifle powder for 2016--supposed to have a wide range of application, but will leave you handicapped to their load data until new manuals are created. (Yes, I know a lot of you would prefer them to just make more Trail Boss.)

IMR 4955

+1 on more Trail Boss..................
even if just the small bottle.

So it might be for 2016...........
that should get to Nevada in three years with a tail wind................
get it squared away for me will you ?

When they wehre STILL IMR, they used to put out free booklets which most dealers put out on the counter-- I am guessing at this point this is now in the form of the internet?? :( The booklets were quite handy in their day. :)

Doesn't IMR already have all the burn rates covered in every conceivable rifle application? Didn't they just come out with two new rifle powders last year?
I never have been able to get all their numbers of powders squared away in my head. There's no rhyme nor reason to them as far as I know.

They are also dropping a few.....

They are also dropping a few, SR 4759 and I think another SR powder and they probably have plans for more. I'm an old timer so I just bought enough to hold me for a while. When it runs out we may be shooting Phasers or something.

I have 8 lbs. of the CFE223 and feel that the Copper Fouling Eliminator actually does reduce copper fouling. Enough that it takes me about 1/2 as long to get the barrel on my precision AR totally copper free. Note, when you have a rifle that has shot cloverleafs less than 3/10 inch in total span at 100 yards you do get a bit obsessive about a perfectly clean barrel.

I've also found CFE223 to produce excellent accuracy with a 68 grain Hornady BTHP Match bullet and it meters wonderfully. However with a 60 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint bullet I have not been able to find any charge between Min and Max that will group under 2 inches at 100 yards. Still don't understand why that is but I tested the full range from minimum to maximum at 2/10 grain intervals with no joy at all.

So, while it's old school and meters miserably enough for me to keep some tweezers next to my scale I'll still keep a good stock of Varget on hand. Because Varget will match or perhaps exceed the accuracy of the CFE223 with that Hornady bullet and with the Nosler bullet 3/8 MOA is routine.

BTW, I still don't understand why I can't get acceptable accuracy with that Nosler bullet using CFE223. In my 20 inch Shilen Barreled precision AR that Nosler loaded with Varget runs 2950 fps with wonderful accuracy. Push that same bullet to 2950 fps with CFE223 and groups come in at a bit over 2 MOA. If anyone can come up with an explanation for that I would love to see it.

If the IMR powder numbers were incremental according to their burn rates would help tremendously.

Improved MILITARY Rifle powder.
Blame the gummint.
They are the experts at numbering stuff.

Load data is available on their website for the new powders.
Over time we should see it expanded.

Be safe and good luck
Ruggy

I tried the 4955 in my 7MM mag and liked the velocity, about 3000fps but, not a big fan of the grouping. I am getting better luck with RL 19 and 17.

Might have to try it in my 270WCF

You will get a better response from a new thread than bringing back a thread that is over two years old. It's no longer a new powder.
