So the FL trip is on.

Son & I are booked on a tarpon charter out of Boca Grande, but what’s a good cheap rig for pier or surf fishing that’ll handle fish up to say, 20 lbs? Prefer 2-piece rods for travel.

Any other fun fishing-related activities? Flounder-gigging? Crabbing?

Never fished in FL, but I would think most popular harbors would have "party" fishing boats going out for bottom species. Most party boats are around $30 or so per person, and usually supply the rod & reel. Those I have been on usually sell food and drink, and offer bait and terminal tackle.

For a pier rig, I would wait until you get there, then hit a couple bait shops for a used or new rig, as they recommend for the area. Pier and surf rigs are different animals. Most pier fishermen use baitcasters, surf fishing guys use spinning gear. The spinning rig is the most versatile. A decent rig in either style should cost you less than $100, along with basic tackle. Of course, you can spend a lot more, but its not really needed for what you are doing.

I would take the advice of the local bait shop what bait / tackle / techniques are popular for the species you will be targeting in the area.

Check out Bass Pro or Cabelas, there are several good rods today at a reasonable price, something 9 ft rated 1/2oz to 1.5 to 2 oz for tossing lures, 15 lb test line is all u will need, Ive caught 40 lb plus Stripers on 15 lb test, for a reel something around the size of a Penn 4500 will do.

Pier, surf, and flounder, are like 3 different rigs. Most pier stuff will be no good in the surf, and both are bigger than you need for flounder.

I agree , get a recommendation. I am a shore fisherman in RI, and I fish all light tackle. 3000 and 4000 class reels with 10 or 15 pound line. Nothing over 7', but you can't muscle or lift a fish with the light stuff I use. Actually my stuff is MH and H freshwater rods and Shimano Stradic reels

I didn’t ask about a rig for all three, I said pier OR surf and specifically asked if flounder gigging was available in that part of FL.

I would wait until you get there to see where you will be fishing, if you will be fishing off a pier, you will need something heavier than you would need for just surf fishing.
